It is with sadness we announce that  E. Ann Ellis, an MSA member
for   many years, passed away on 29 Octo ber 2016. Ann was known by all for her vast knowledge of microscopy, especially biological specimen preparation and her expertise in the chemistry and formulation of embedding resins, much of which was published in peer-reviewed journals. She was a charter member of the MSA Technologists' Forum (1982), served in several capacities on the Tech Forum board, and was an organizer/chair of a number of Tech Forum-sponsored scientific sessions as well as an Invited Speaker at the Annual Meeting and Microscopy & Microanalysis over the years. Ann was also a member and former Chair of the MSA Certification Committee, and past member of the MSA Nominating and Fellowship Committees. She was a member and officer of the Southeastern Microscopy Society (SEMS) and the Texas Microscopy Society (TMS). Ann held positions at the University of Florida, San Joaquin Delta College and Texas A&M University prior to her retirement in 2013.

More than anything, Ann was always willing to share her knowledge with others, and was a teacher and mentor to students and early-career microscopists. She was the Microscopy 101 Editor of Microscopy Today, which gave her an additional platform to share microscopy knowledge. Ann was recognized by MSA with the Professional Technical Staff Award in 2004, the Hildegard H. Crowley Outstanding Technologist Award in the Biological Sciences in 2010, and was elected as a Fellow of the Microscopy Society of America in 2015. The citation on her Fellowship certificate reads, "For an outstanding career of selfless dedication to the field of microscopy in research, applications and educational outreach. Ann Ellis personifies excellence and professionalism."

Ann's obituary can be found at  E. Ann Ellis obituary and the online guestbook can be viewed  here.

We extend our deepest condolences to Ann's family and friends. She will be greatly missed.

Local Affiliated Societies
Local Affiliated Societies News Local Affiliated Societies News
by Bev Maleeff, LAS Director

MSA's Local Affiliated Societies provide networking and outreach opportunities for the microscopy community. The list of LAS can be found at http://microscopy.org/communities/local.cfm.

With the meeting year now over, I hope that all the LAS meetings and symposia in 2016 were successful, and that everyone who attended had a chance to learn new things and meet colleagues old and new.

If your LAS is planning a meeting in early 2017, please let me know soon so I can announce it in an upcoming issue of the MSA Update. Remember that MSA provides LAS support with Tour Speakers, Grants-in-Aid and Special Meeting grants. Details can be found at http://www.microscopy.org/communities/programs.cfm.

Nominations for LAS Director: My term as LAS Director runs until December 2017. Elections for my successor will be held at the LAS Breakfast next summer at M&M2017 in St. Louis. Nominations are now being accepted; you may self-nominate if you are interested. Contact me at beverly.e.maleeff@gsk.com if you have any questions.

Tax information for LAS: I am currently working with Bob Dziuban on a brand-new web page with a FAQ about incorporation and taxes for the Local Affiliated Societies. Stay tuned for an announcement when the page goes live.

Have a wonderful holiday season!
Bev

Renu Sharma was elected as Co-Chair of the FIG Committee. Please welcome her to that role.

Two Pre-Meeting Congresses were approved for the 2017 meeting in St. Louis, one organized by the Aberration Corrected Electron Microscopy FIG and one organized by Focused Ion Beam FIG. Requests for a Pre-Meeting Congress in 2018 will be reviewed and approved at the 2017 Winter Council meeting in January.
