Illustrated by Mia Smigiel, Age 11

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, but encouraging one another.” Hebrews 10:24-25

It is said you cannot go back home. Over the past year, Donna and I found that saying did not hold true for us as we transitioned from Asheville back to Charlotte and, more specifically, back to SMPC. After a full year of transition (retirement, Hurricane Helene, and a decision to move and settle back in Charlotte), I have had time to reflect on all these things.

We were a bit disoriented with the changes, but once we came back to visit SMPC we immediately felt the love, the hope, the joy and the laughter that we had come to know earlier. We had an overwhelming feeling of peace and comfort thanks to the congregation and staff wrapping their arms around us. We knew we were not alone. We needed this “hug” and our church family delivered. The small conversations with old and new friends, the music that spoke to us, the messages of hope and counsel, and the warmth of this place we call SMPC. We knew we had come back home!

At this time of year, I hope we can all remember to share our joy of the season, the hope it signals, and provide peace and comfort to those in need. As we begin our own transition as a church family, my hope is that we will “hug” each other in the way that Donna and I were hugged when we needed it most. This is our home and where our heart is.

Lord, thank you for the blessings of faith, love, and community. Guide us through the coming days and remind us you are always with us. Amen.
