Illustrated by Claire Overcash, Age 12

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:16

Over the years at Christmas, I often pull out one of my favorite picture books to share with students, family, and friends.  The Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snitcher by Robert Kraus has clever rhyming lyrics and colorful illustrations that make it a perfect read aloud for all ages!  And…

                     Christmas cookies without sprinkles

                     are like raisins without wrinkles,

and like sleigh bells without tinkles

                     are Christmas cookies without sprinkles.

Of course, after the reading, the sugar cookies are baked, iced, and decorated with red and green sprinkles for holiday snacking!

But, there is much more to this tale than colorful sprinkles being snatched up by an evil set of wings. The dastardly flying Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snitcher eventually comprehends through the help of young Little Nat that spreading sprinks to the needy is far more satisfying than munching and hoarding these teensy sweet treats. Remembering Jesus Christ’s words, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” I find this simple story a reminder that kindness and generosity is the most meaningful way to express our faith this time of the year and throughout.

                      “You’ve taught me a lesson,

                      Little Nat,” said the Snitcher.

                      “Though I haven’t a sprinkle,

                      I’ve never been richer.

                      I know now that Christmas

                      is not being greedy.

                      Christmas is spreading

                      sprinks to the needy!”

Heavenly Father, help me to have a more generous heart and compassionate spirit, empathizing with those who suffer. Teach me to be more giving and to serve those who are in need during this joyous Christmas season and throughout the year ahead. You have given so much to me, so I strive to always share with others.   Amen.
