Advent is upon us! This season of joyful preparation reminds us now, perhaps more than any time in recent memory, that we are waiting for the light of hope to come. It is hard to believe, but after more than three months on campus, we are preparing to pause and rest for Christmas break.

Our presence together these past few months has been an absolute gift. I want to share my deep and sustained gratitude to our students, faculty, and staff for their diligence and commitment in following the safety protocols that have allowed us to stay in school. It has meant so much to be with one another united in spirit and purpose.

As we turn our eyes and our hearts toward Christmas, we know that darkness is finite and that soon and very soon our days will only get brighter. I hope you will join me in celebrating all of the following exciting news and accomplishments from around our community!

Farewell & Thank You to Brother Donald Murray, SJ
Many of you will know that we traditionally say goodbye to retiring faculty and staff members by joining together in the Hunter-Fahey Commons and bidding them farewell with raucous applause. Though we were unable to do that this year, our boys formed a socially-distance line along the whole drive outside McElroy Hall to say goodbye to Brother Donald Murray, SJ after 53 remarkable years on Morrissey Boulevard. It was quite the sight, and I know brought Br. Don such joy!

Br. Don held many roles over the years in Guidance and served the academic office as registrar. Many of our alumni remember Brother for his selfless service driving countless teams to and from games. He was inducted into the BC High Hall of Fame and awarded the Paul J. Hunter ’53 Man for Others award in 2014.

Br. Don will continue his work with the Advancement Team at Campion Center fundraising for the Jesuits. On behalf of Fr. Croghan and the Jesuit Community, Principal Lewis, the faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents and friends, we wish to thank Br. Don for his vocation and his service to BC High!

Join us for Holiday Season Livestream Performances
We recognize the tremendous impact that COVID-19 has had on our student-athletes and student-artists, who have continued working tirelessly to compete and perform this year. While our faithful supporters cannot cheer them on as you normally would in the stands of Viola Stadium or the seats of the Bulger Performing Arts Center - we have worked to bring their performances to you! We have already Livestreamed several soccer games, and more recently, performances by the BC High Chamber Choir and Piano Ensemble.

There are plenty of amazing liturgies and performances still to be seen, including tomorrow's presentation from the Arrupe Division's Music History class and next week's holiday favorite Lessons & Carols with the Liturgical Musicians.

Giving Thanks through our Food Drives
In addition to our annual Boston Housing Authority Food Drive that has fed hundreds of families each year for two decades, our students took up a new initiative this year for Boston Catholic Charities with help from Trustee Stephen Fulton '83 P'25, '26. To hear from the students about this exciting new initiative, and the added importance of giving back this year, watch the video below.
Jesuit Community Prayer Intentions
Throughout November, our wonderful Jesuit Community prayed for the loved ones who have left us to celebrate the Feast of All Souls. We placed these names near the altar in Loyola Chapel to be remembered in our Masses, prayers, and sacrifices as an expression of our faith and in gratitude for your being part of the BC High community.

Although we are now in Advent, I wanted to remind you that you can submit prayer intentions of any kind at the form on this page, which will be offered up by our Jesuit Community. The broader BC High family remains constantly in their hearts and in their prayers.

(Staff Photo By Matt Stone/ MediaNews Group/Boston Herald)
The entire BC High community shares our deepest congratulations with Justice Serge Georges, Jr. '88 on being unanimously confirmed to the Massachusetts Supreme Court this morning.

In case you missed the wonderful press conference last month in which Justice Georges' nomination was announced, you can watch it here. Throughout the conference, Governor Charlie Baker, Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, and Justice Georges himself consistently referenced his deep love for BC High and the role Jesuit education has played in his life.

I am confident that Justice Georges will continue to be an incredible leader and pillar of our community, as he has been for decades. He will serve and lead on the Massachusetts Supreme Court with the same wisdom, compassion, and indefatigable energy I have had the pleasure of seeing firsthand in working with him as our Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees. Congratulations, Justice Georges!
Virtual Alumni & Family Week and Giving Tuesday a Success!
BC High’s first-ever virtual Alumni and Family Week was a resounding success. Thank you to everyone who participated in all of the engaging spiritual, athletic, and community-building fun!

While we missed having you on campus for our favorite fall activities, we were still able to celebrate our Eagle spirit together. From the The Turkey Trot & Family Fun Run (5k), to Dine-Out Night at restaurants in the BC High community, to Guided Meditation and even a whiskey class with Mark McLaughlin ’97 - I was thrilled to see the vibrancy of our community in so many ways. And of course, it was incredibly special to start Thanksgiving Day with a Livestream Mass from Loyola Chapel. Go Eagles!
And, at the beginning of this month, over 400 alumni, parents, families and friends participated in Giving Tuesday, setting record participation numbers and raising over $160,000 for the Fund for BC High!

Our Advancement team was blown away by your generosity. I want to personally thank everyone who participated and made this year’s Giving Tuesday an incredible success. We did it!
