Wednesday in the Second Week of Advent

December 13, 2023

The Second Week of Advent draws us toward comfort in a time of change and hope for the future. It can be tempting to question the relevance of comfort and hope in today’s world when so much of what we encounter is frustrating and disheartening. Institutions we thought we could depend on betray our trust. Important traditions get left by the wayside. Much of what we hear about the future sounds frightening.

This week’s readings remind us that the future God has promised for us is not like that. Certainly, there will be strife and struggle as we journey through this life, but we are promised an eternal hope and comfort in Christ. Therefore, we must remind ourselves that the Lord keeps the promises he has made, even when the world is rushing past around us and we feel like we are on unstable ground.

The contents of the promises we find in this week’s readings should fill us with joy, spurring us on to live holy lives in imitation of Christ. Though all other things should pass away, the word of the Lord will stand forever and all things will be restored in righteousness through Christ. We will be gathered up like lambs by the Good Shepherd, our Great Comforter. The promised day of the Lord is coming and we await it, walking with Christ in faith. What beautiful promises we are given to hold in our hearts and to share with others in today’s changing world.
