Peace

Last Sunday we lit the candle of peace on the Advent wreath. Peace…what does that word mean to you? I imagine all of us have several answers to that question from something as simple as “quiet or silence” to as far-reaching as “the end to all war.” But I think that most of us want to experience the peace of God, a peace “which passes all understanding.”

During this time of year, it can be especially difficult to find peace, with so much going on and too much to do. So I want to share a favorite Celtic/Gaelic blessing of mine which I hope will provide some comfort and peace to you during Advent and beyond. It is based on a poem written by a Scottish writer named William Sharp and has been adapted and set to music by John Rutter. It is well worth listening to. (You may have heard it sung by our choir at St. Stephen's.)

Deep peace of the running wave to you;

Deep peace of the flowing air to you;

Deep peace of the quiet earth to you;

Deep peace of the shining stars to you;

Deep peace of the gentle night to you;

Moon and stars pour their healing light on you;

Deep peace of Christ the light of the world to you;

Deep peace of Christ to you.

May this blessing provide some comfort and peace to you during this Advent season and beyond.
