Advent is a very meaningful season in the church year for me. This year it seems even more so. I listen to the news and read the paper, and I find so much pain and stress and anger and fear. It can give one a sense of hopelessness.

I think about the Advent wreath and I am drawn to the symbolism of each candle…Hope, Peace, Joy, Love. Oh, how we all need giant portions of each of these gifts.

My Advent meditation this year is to focus on the gift for each week. My practice will include meditation on scripture. But I feel an urgent need to go further.

Each day of Advent, I will search for hope or peace, joy or love, as I go through my journey. I suspect I will find examples of each that I may usually rush past without seeing or acknowledging.

But I can’t stop there! I will focus my interactions with family, friends, strangers, and people I may choose to not have in my life. The focus will be to share hope, peace, joy, and love.

My prayer is this practice will continue every day for the rest of my life!

Hope, peace, joy, love. May we all share these attributes. May it be so.
