Today we celebrate Mary, Mother of God, Mary of Guadalupe, in this little corner of the world, in Jujuy, the mission land where we have been sent and received.

As we walk this Advent and we witness the deep and profound relationship the local communities have with Mary of Guadalupe, we realize how much meaning the candles they carry bring to their spiritual life, the life of the families and communities, to their journey with God.

The local women, men, children have become our catechists. They remind us of the two most distinctive notes that this time of expectation invites us to revisit.

Do not be afraid: the fear of the uncertain future, of our weakness, of the other who is different, of opening the doors to God, cannot paralyze us. Fear prevents us from walking towards the future with hope. Fear lets our ghosts grow. We are invited to trust, to trust that as Mary, that humble and simple woman who listened to God with confidence, did.

You will bear a son and you will name him Jesus. Mary was given a mission; we are given a mission. It is the same mission. Let’s bear Jesus for the world. Let’s bring light into the night, let’s kindle hope in us and in all those around us. Let’s maintain the fire during the night.

God, teach us to walk with the candle of hope and tender care, as the simple women, men and children of Jujuy have taught us to do, because the Word dwells among us for all the world to see.
