Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace.

2 Peter 3:14

I pad downstairs, let Buddy out, make my coffee; all in the December darkness. I’ve made a promise to myself this Advent season to wake before the dawn so that I may see the first light each day. And you know what? That first light comes. It comes, rain or shine. The first light of each day is so steadfast, it’s almost ordinary.

This practice reminds me that it is in the quiet anticipation that I recognize the miraculous gift of life and love in Christ. There it is—light on the horizon peeking through—quiet and peace-filled—and I whisper, “Good morning God,” before I flick on the kitchen lights.

The words of 2 Peter 3:14 invite us not only to wait, but to enter into that waiting “to be found by him” with our whole selves, listening, breathing, watching, and hoping. In the swirl of busy days and the rush of December’s “getting ready for Christmas,” we are called to pause to experience what it means to be at peace: the warmth of stillness in early morning prayer, the quiet confidence that comes from trust, and the subtle joy that blooms from hope.

My prayer is that this Advent, we let anticipation shape our actions—let kindness grow in daily interactions, let forgiveness open new doors, and let quiet moments remind us of the promise Advent holds. We are beloved—each and every one of us, no exceptions. May we find ourselves ready—at rest, open, and at peace—when Christ draws near.
