JASON'S REFLECTIONS
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Then he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They answered, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied— altogether there were about twelve of them.
Acts 19:1-7
I received a request last Sunday to start providing the book, chapter, and verse that my reflection is on, but, for the sake of convenience, I'm going to go ahead and provide the whole passage from now on.
There's something disconcerting about not having what you need when you need it. Many times when Billie Kinley and I take the coffee cart down to the old Kroger parking lot to serve coffee and connect with our neighbors in the community, I tend to forget an essential item like pitchers for steaming milk, or milk itself. How can I make a cappuccino, which is 2oz of espresso and 4-6oz of steamed milk—there is no such thing as a small, medium, or large cappuccino—without milk?
As milk is essential to a proper cappuccino, so is the Holy Spirit to carrying out the loving, liberating, and life-giving ways of following Jesus. And while we do not have to be conscious of the Spirit’s presence in our lives for her—or him, but we all certainly know that the Spirit has no gender—to be active in our lives. Yet, it is important for us to know that we are not the men and women of Ephesus in today’s NT reading living out this life of faith without, so to speak, any steam in our milk. Let that be a reminder of how truly empowered you are to live lives that are loving, liberating, and life-giving—especially in the midst of a period that is fractious and challenging as our time certainly is.
Amen.
