THIS IS THE WEEK!!!! OCTOBER 17TH!!
'CHERI'S TEAM' WALKING TO END HUNGER
If you've failed to sign up to walk on October 17th or to donate to those who are walking or even to assist as cheerleaders along the way, NOW is the time to do that! We will be walking after worship on this coming Sunday.
We are excited that Kirby Strickland and his family will join us for worship that day as we remember Cheri Strickland, who with Kirby, was instrumental in Advent's strong participation in Crop Walk for many years.
-
Special 'Cheri's Team' t-shirts are available for $20. All of the proceeds will go to the CROP Walk. Shirts may be pre-ordered by sending a note to Jennie Henderson (jhendersonfit@gmail.com) with the quantity and the size or you may take your chances and wait to order from the table that will be set up on the 17th.
- We will also collect cans of soups and meats for our Advent Food Pantry so plan to bring some cans to worship that day.
- If you'd like to bring a card for Cheri's family and share a favorite memory, a basket for the cards will be available in the Gathering Space.
If you wish to donate via check, just write your check to CWS/Crop and give it to Jennie or the person you are sponsoring or put it in the offering basket. You may also give through online giving from the Advent website. The funds will come to Advent but we will in turn write a check to CWS/Crop. Just be sure to add Crop Walk on the "other" line for funds in OLG.
In addition to the wonderful tribute to Cheri and the opportunity to greet Kirby and children Patrick, Joe, and Mary Faith and their families, there will also be lots of activities that day so mark your calendars now to participate. Once again, we invite as many members and friends as possible to join in on the walk through College Downs. If you can't walk, then please sponsor someone or contribute to the fundraising. Volunteers are still needed to help make this day truly special. Send an email to Jennie Henderson (jhendersonfit@gmail.com) if you are interested in helping out in some other way.
Lastly, if you've not taken the opportunity to pick up a copy of "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park., please do so. There are still some on the table in the Gathering Space. This book gives us a first-hand account of how the lack of clean water has a terrible effect on some parts of the world. Please contact Jennie Henderson if you would like to join in the discussion of the book.

The service will be conducted in the Columbarium and the family has indicated that anyone who wishes to attend may do so.

A Drive-Thru Pick-Up Event Only -- Pre-Orders Required by Sunday, October 24th
PORK BBQ IS BACK! Think smoky and delicious! The Lutheran Men will sponsor the Fall BBQ as a drive through pick-up event. All orders must be placed in advance no later than SUNDAY OCTOBER 24, 2021 via the link below.
All items will be ordered ala carte (individual versus combined). In other words, if you want to purchase an individual meal, you should select: (1) Chopped Pork BBQ 1 pint, (1) Regular Beans ½ Pint or (1) Spicy Beans ½ Pint, and (1) Red Slaw ½ Pint or (1) White Slaw ½ Pint.
A limited supply of 'June’s Sauce' will be available in pints. This finger lickin’ good barbeque sauce is named for June Porter who started our barbeques. June never shared the specific sauce recipe, but we think this sauce is as close as possible to the version of the sauce he prepared and we used for many years. Rumor has it that his sauce recipe may be in the time capsule installed when the sanctuary was built in 1990. Only time will tell, but unless you want to wait until 2090 when the capsule is be opened, we suggest you try this sauce now and see what you think.
Place your order now by clicking either of these links:
If you have no access to a computer, you may place your order by calling Joe at 704-575-9575. Pre-orders are required!
- If you have already used Sign-Up Genius you will need to log In if not, you will need to first create a Sign-Up.
- Selection Quantities can be changed on the 2nd Screen.
- Please Print & Bring a Copy of Confirmation Email with you to the pick-up.
- Pickup will be between 4pm & 6pm Saturday, October 30th.
- Enter at the Mark Twain Road entrance (front) and exit onto Sandburg.
- If you encounter any problems placing an order, please don’t hesitate to contact Joe Palumbo, Keith Wassum or Russ McKittrick.
All proceeds will be used for Lutheran Men Outreach which funds various outreach projects for the church community.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS WANTED
It can be hard to take that first step to research community volunteer opportunities, find a spot in our schedules, go through the hoops to sign up then actually follow through. We know the need is out there but just don’t know where to start. If you are interested in volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank, Crisis Assistance Ministries, or The Galilee Center, please contact Diane Wassum (dwassum@bellsouth.net) to let her know. Opportunities at these non-profits range from sorting food/clothing to meal preparation, to garden maintenance. None require any previous experience .... just show up and instructions will be given in what to do. Once Diane has a group of folks interested in volunteering, she will come up with available dates and match them with the volunteer opportunities. Diane can also be reached by text at 704-301-5630.

If you are interested in ordering a beautiful arrangement in memory or honor of someone or of an event, please sign up on the flower chart that will be on the table at the doors from the Gathering Space to Orinson Hall. The cost of the arrangement is $40. The flowers will be placed on the stage for Sunday morning worship and then you may take them home to enjoy throughout the coming week. You will be contacted as we near your reserved date for particulars on colors or any details for what you would like published regarding the arrangement. For questions, please contact Pam Rhynes ( officeadm@adventl.org).

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
About 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. Early detection of breast cancer is so important. With annual mammograms and monthly self-exams, women can be good stewards of their bodies. The American Cancer Society recommends all women should begin having yearly mammograms by age 45 to help find breast cancer at an early stage.
Be pro-active! Make a commitment to schedule your annual mammogram, now. AND perform a breast self-exam each month. Take care of the body God gave you!

GIFTS FOR GOD FROM THE PEOPLE OF GOD!!!
To make your gift, you may:
- Bring your offerings to Sunday worship.
- Mail a check to the church at 8840 University City Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28213. All offerings received will go to General Fund unless otherwise designated on the memo line.
- Use bill pay through your personal bank or credit union.
- Use Online Giving. See the info below for details on using this tool.
- Bring your offering by the church and leave it on the counter near the door to Pastor Ward's office.
- Drop an envelope containing your offering into the slot of the US Postal box at the corner of our parking lot near the office entrance.
Using Online Giving:
You may make a one-time gift through Online Giving or you may set up recurring donations which you can modify or cancel at any time.
- This tool allows you to use a credit card, debit card, or bank checking or savings account payment.
- The church does pay a small fee for payments made through cards and American Express is not permitted because their fee is too costly. The tool asks if you'd like to add a small amount to offset our cost.
- You can also designate where you want your gift to go.... General Fund for operating expenses or other special fund. A number of special funds are built into the tool already but if your choice is not listed, you can choose OTHER and type the name of the fund you want to get credit. You can do multiple donations in one entry.
-
To use this tool you can go to the Advent website (adventlu.org) and click on GIVE in the upper right-hand corner of the main screen, OR you can click on the icon here in this note: Click here to access Online Giving now
(Remember to give to sandwiches, World Hunger, Our Neighbors' Plate (ONP) by adding to your regular offering and mark appropriately on the memo line of your check or add to the "other" category in on-line giving.)

CHURCH OFFICE HOURS
All church office staff continue to work remotely. Contact staff by email or phone as both are being monitored by staff from home.
CALENDAR REMINDER
Making plans for an event at Advent, are you the leader of a small group or ministry leader with monthly meetings? Whatever the event or gathering (even zoom meetings) be sure to let the church office know the date, time, and room or space. Doing so is a big help in keeping the church online calendar current while communicating Advent activities and avoiding the possible mishap of overbooking a particular area. Call us at 704-549-1555 or email Harriett (churchadministrator@adventlu.org) or Pam (officeadmin@adventlu.org). Thanks, we appreciate your help.
