A Word from the Pastor

December 6, 2024

Over 30 members of our parish (youth and young adults) attended the recent National Catholic Youth Conference on November 14-16, 2024, at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center in Long Beach, CA. They had a wonderful experience of Christian community, growth in faith and good fun. Over 30,000 youth from around the country participated. An event like this gives young people an opportunity to connect with other Catholic youth leaders from across the country. They see how others are growing in their faith and receive encouragement. They are challenged to continue growing in their faith. A lot of positive networking takes place too.

We were fortunate that this conference was so close by. Next year’s conference will be in Indianapolis. Being so close enabled a large number of our young parishioners to attend. Pat Clasby, our Director of Young Ministry, was also a part of the planning team for this event.

I am especially proud of the young members of our parish who do so much to share their faith with their peers. The young men and women who make up our Youth Ministry Core Team serve as junior catechists (“JCats”) and discussion leaders for our Confirmation program. You also hear them giving witness on occasion during our Sunday 5:00 pm Mass. They are eager to share their faith and help their peers grow closer to the Lord.

During the recent National Youth Ministry Conference in Long Beach, a young man from our parish core team and a JCat, Jordan Galindo, gave a talk in which he offered his personal witness about the challenge of living his faith as a high school student. (See his picture below while giving his talk.) It was well-received by everyone. In fact, Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu who was attending the conference with youth from his diocese was so impressed by Jordan that he used his story in his homily on the Solemnity of Christ the King.

Nice job, Jordan! Thank you for your courage to share your faith in front of thousands of your peers.

Retirement Fund for Religious

Our collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious will be this weekend, December 7-8.

Thousands of elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests spent years working in ministries—such as Catholic schools, parishes, and hospitals—often for little or no pay. Today, many religious communities do not have enough savings to meet retirement needs. Your donation helps provide medications, nursing care, and more. Please give generously. An envelope is included in your bimonthly packet of envelopes.

The deadline for filing claims of sexual abuse is February 3, 2025. Click here for full information

Luke 3:1-6

Background on the Gospel Reading

This week and next, our Gospel readings invite us to consider John the Baptist and his relationship to Jesus. John the Baptist appears in the tradition of the great prophets, preaching repentance and reform to the people of Israel. To affirm this, Luke quotes at length from the prophet Isaiah. John baptizes for repentance and for forgiveness of sins, preparing the way for God's salvation.

The three Synoptic Gospels—Mark, Matthew, and Luke—attest to the importance of the baptism of John in preparing for Jesus. Only the Gospel of Luke, however, extends the connection between these two men to their birth. The first two chapters of Luke's Gospel contain the Infancy Narrative, which tells about the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. These stories set the stage for the beginning of Jesus' public ministry in chapter 3.

The evangelist Luke is the author of the Gospel that bears his name, and he also wrote the Acts of the Apostles as a continuation of the story of Jesus and the Church. In these two works, Luke's sense of time and history emerges. He identifies three epochs of salvation history: the time before Christ, the time of Christ, and the time of the Church and the Holy Spirit. In today's Gospel reading, as elsewhere, John the Baptist is presented as the figure who bridges the time before Christ and prepares the way for Christ's own ministry.

In today's Gospel we also note Luke's attention to political and historical detail. Luke shows that salvation is for all people and situated in world events. Therefore, Luke lists the political and religious leaders at the time of John's appearance in the desert. Salvation is understood as God's breaking into this political and social history.

John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus, we too are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives the coming of the Lord, as John did.

Wake, Awake the Night Is Flying

This is a classic Advent hymn. Here the Concordia Choir, with René Clausen, Conductor performs F. Melius Christiansen's arrangement of Wake Awake. It is complex and rich in texture.

volver a nuestras diversiones.

Feliz Adviento…
