Greetings!

The Fourth Sunday of Easter

This Sunday is often called “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Jesus is called the “gate” of the sheep in Sunday’s gospel. The risen Christ opens the way to abundant life. He anoints our heads with oil and guides us beside the still waters of our baptism. Each Sunday he spreads a feast before us in the midst of the world’s violence and war. We go forth to be signs of the resurrection and extend God’s tender care to all creation.

Martin Luther Quote of the Week

“This life therefore is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness, not health, but healing, not being but becoming, not rest but exercise. We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it, the process is not yet finished, but it is going on, this is not the end, but it is the road. All does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being purified.”

—Martin Luther (1483-1546)

Grief with No Warning

Death and transition are universal human experiences. Acknowledging our common mortality, some anonymous plainspoken philosopher coined the phrase: “Nobody gets out alive.” But that realization doesn’t lesson the pain that comes from the loss of a loved one, especially when the loss is unexpected or swift. How can we better love and support our sisters and brothers in their grief?

Download a study guide for “Grief with no warning,” which appeared in Living Lutheran‘s May 2017 print issue. The pdf includes a three-page study guide written by Robert C. Blezard and a copy of the article.

Is It I? Video now on Youtube
"Is It I?" is a living recreation of Leonardo  da Vinci's world-famous painting of THE LAST SUPPER.  The thirteen living characters, Jesus and his disciples, come from the table to the front and offer a monologue of his relationship with Jesus while also questioning himself, if he could be the one who will betray Jesus.

It is a powerful drama to watch and to share with others.
Prayer - there's an app for that

We’ve all done it. Someone tells us about an event in their life—a celebration or cause of concern—and we tell them, “I’ll pray for you.” Then it slips our mind when we get home. Our intention was good, but the follow-through wasn’t quite there.

It turns out that technology can help. Often we think of prayer and worship as an escape from technology (and sometimes it should be), but the right digital tools can actually add to our prayer life. Sometimes it can be as simple as providing a space to jot down a prayer concern as soon as we hear it. Other times—like a church bell ringing on Sunday morning—it’s an audible reminder to take time out of our day for prayer.

Church Word of the Week

IDOL

That thing you think is serving you but is really enslaving you.

So you think you only WORSHIP one God?  Well, imagine "being you" without your career, or your money, or your good health, or your success, or your stamp collection, or your alcohol. An idol is anything we love or put our trust in.  In Bible days, people worshiped gods of fertility, cults, and the golden calf.  Today? Money, sex, sports, and self-esteem.  We imagine we control these things, but often it is the opposite.  But the true GOD shows power in this - when those things let us down, God is there in the depths of our lows - never abandoning us, saving us from false gods.

Update on Senior Seminarian
Sarah Habermehl Locke:
Two months ago, we (Daniel and I) were assigned to Region 9 (Southeast US) and the Florida-Bahamas Synod. Things were moving very quickly with Florida at the beginning of the process and we were presented with two congregations. We ultimately discerned that these congregations were not where we are being called. The Florida-Bahamas Synod said that there are currently no other calls, so they allowed us to be “on contingency” with the North Carolina Synod. We are currently “on contingency” with North Carolina, but we do not expect to have any paperwork or start interviewing until the end of summer or beginning of fall. In another month, we will be able to “release” our paperwork to the rest of the synods in the United States and we will be able to talk to any bishop’s office. Therefore, we will be staying in Columbia, SC in seminary housing until July 31 (when they need the housing for new students) and working at Olive Garden (Daniel) and Tazza Kitchen (Sarah). We graduate with our M.Div. degrees on May 20, when we will celebrate with our families. We are hopeful that we will receive calls before we have to move out, so we have not yet made plans for after July 31. This has been an incredibly difficult time for our family, so please continue to pray for our future calls and our patience and encouragement in the meantime. Thank you for your support and love.
