Advent's Vision

We are Advent Lutheran Church.  As diverse children of God, we strive to be the embodiment of that which God wants all people on earth to be.  We love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.  We love our neighbor as ourselves, and express this love in service to others. By accepting God's gift of grace through our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, we are reconciled to God forever.

THE CENSUS IS COMING!

As caring and involved followers of Christ, the Advent Advocacy Activities group knows that it is important that we look out for the common good. No doubt you have heard that there is a 2020 Census. The official Census Day is April 1, 2020, and we are spreading the word about how important the census is to Mecklenburg County. Why? Because the census brings valuable resources to our community, such as federal funding for things like healthcare, education and transportation. The census is convenient, safe and required. In the weeks leading up to Census Day, you will receive a letter from the census asking you to respond online. It only takes a few minutes to ensure you and your family are counted. Everyone counts - from newborns to senior citizens! To learn more, visit

RESULTS OF VITALITY SURVEY

In late October/early November the congregation was asked to participate in a Vitality Survey.   We had 146 surveys completed which was a great response.  Thank you!   These surveys were sent to Baylor University, who tallied the results and sent them to the NC Synod, the sponsor of the survey.   In January we received the results and on January 26 held a meeting after worship to hear from Pastor Danielle DeNise who reviewed our results with us.   Now the work begins to discern where God is leading us with the results.  Over the next few months planning sessions will begin discussions.

Meanwhile, a number of people have expressed interest in seeing the results and below are the charts that we received from the Synod.  Most are fairly explanatory if you study the chart.  Feel free to share comments with council members if you wish; however, keep in mind that we are all just in the beginning steps of discernment.   You are encouraged to participate in any future meetings as they are announced.   Please click on the links below to access the results.

BECAUSE OF THE CROSS OUR PRAYERS CAN MOVE MOUNTAINS

During the Lent season, Advent's PRAYER TEAM provides an opportunity for the Advent community to be in intentional prayer for others.
Look for the wooden "Prayer" Cross which will be in the Narthex starting Ash Wednesday through Easter Sunday.
This cross is covered with purple and white crocheted Prayer Squares. The purple color represents the Lent season and the white color represents Easter.
The squares have an attached tag containing names of members of our congregation, extended family members or friends who are on our prayer list.
Please take a square or 2 OR more, home with you and pray for those folks. You can rotate the squares throughout these 6 weeks of Lent. Prayers for many, by many!

WHAT'S ALL THIS CONSTRUCTION ???

You may be wondering what the construction in the parking lot is all about!   Well, here's your answer!

This is an Eagle Scout project to build a shelter for the Lutheran Men when they are cooking barbecue or chicken.   It's really difficult to stand in the pouring rain to cook and the men have been planning for some time to build a shelter.   Our own Andy Robinson is a leader of a Scout troop and a mentor for Connor Kincaid, the young man who has undertaken this as his project.  The Lutheran Men were delighted to let this young man run with the project.

Funding for this project is provided by both the Scouts and by Lutheran men. Donations are welcome.   Please see Andy Robinson, Tim O'Rourke, or Russ McKittrick to make donations or if you have further questions.

FEBRUARY FOOD:   Canned Fruits

Did you know a can of pineapples or peaches can make someone smile? Canned fruits make an excellent and healthy finish for an otherwise lackluster meal, the type of fare many people experience on a daily basis. Please help fill our food pantry with all kinds of canned fruits as well as plastic jars of applesauce to give a little lift to the meals of our hungry neighbors.

RESOURCES FROM LUNCH & LEARN
ELCA'S APOLOGY TO PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT

On Sunday January 19 our social ministry board sponsored a Lunch and Learn introducing the ELCA's apology to People of African Descent ( https://download.elca.org/ELCA%20Resource%20Repository/Slavery_Apology_Explanation.pdf ).

We had a wonderful attendance and meaningful discussion regarding the ELCA apology and our responsibility as members of the greater Lutheran community.  The January issue of "Living Lutheran" presents some further food for thought on White Privilege found at    https://www.qgdigitalpublishing.com/publication/?i=640231${"#"}{"issue_id":640231,"publication_id":"55089","page":10}

Both publications are excellent reads and inspirational as we live into our call for Justice ( Micah 6:8)

FEBRUARY IS HEART HEALTH MONTH

  • Do you know that smokers are 2 to 4 times more likely to get heart disease?
  • Do you know that salt can raise your blood pressure? And that high blood pressure puts a greater strain on your heart?
  • Do you get enough sleep? Too little sleep can affect your heart health.
  • Do you eat healthy foods and are you physically active?
Now is a good time to start making lifestyle changes that include healthy eating and daily physical activity. Take good care of your body. God created you!

SOCIAL ADVOCACY
In our world of constant turmoil, we as Lutherans may be assisted in our mission to follow Christ by studying the ELCA's guidance on "Addressing Social Concerns".

As Scripture teaches, faith is active in love, and love calls for justice in the relationships and structures of society. Our grateful response to God's love and grace motivates us to live lives that demonstrate our responsibility for the well-being of society, communities and the environment.

In response to the ELCA call for working for social justice our Advent Social Ministry Board is expanding our mission to more intentionally support our congregation and our community in addressing social justice issues.  We now have a small group dedicated to that initiative called Micah 6:8.   If you are interested in getting regular updates on what's going on with social ministry/social justice initiatives in our church and in our community please join our AAA Google Group (Advent Advocacy Activities). You can join the Google Group by contacting Shannon Homesley at  ShannonHomesley@gmail.com .

If you wish to financially aid those devastated by hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, or other natural disasters, Lutheran Disaster Response will directly reach the victims.  To donate, make your donation payable to Advent with disaster relief in the memo line, and we will send your contribution in with any others received.
