In this week's E-Herald edition:

  • Scripture for this upcoming Sunday
  • Study, Prayer, and Open Discussion on Sanctuary
  • Upcoming Events
  • Israel Trip Details and Deadline
  • Birthdays for the upcoming week
Invited and inviting—that is the nature of the church. By God's grace in holy baptism we have a place at the banquet table of the Lord. When, by the power of that same Spirit, humility and mutual love continue among us, the church can be more inviting still.

Study, Prayer, and Open Discussion
in Three Week Series on Sanctuary
At this past Monday's Church Council meeting a discussion was held about the ELCA’s declaration of being a Sanctuary church. Their were questions about the vagueness, the legalities and definition of “Sanctuary”.
According to the ELCA, it is up to the individual churches to decide if we are “Sanctuary”.
The Advent Church Council desires to have time of thoughtful conversation, study, and prayer with the congregation. Therefore, the congregation is encouraged to read and ponder the materials already provided at AdventELC.org/cwa, pray, and attend each week of this intentional time of study and open discussion lead by Pastor Layne on September 8, 15, and 22 in the Fellowship Hall from 9:45-10:45 a.m.

The topics each week will focus on...
  • What is "Sanctuary" and what does the Bible says about movements such as this?
  • The historic role of the church, including the Lutheran Confessions
  • ELCA, AMMPARO, and Advent

We hope you will come
Will you participate in this time of discussion, study, and prayer?

Blessing Bags
for the Homeless

The Social Concerns Team is pleased to sponsor the event again this year! We have some special activities planned (more details to come!) that will enable us to physically share the love of God. As we have done before, we are asking for donations of the following items to be included in Blessing Bags for the Homeless.  NOTE: TRAVEL SIZE ONLY PLEASE!!

The Bed Brigade - - a shared ministry with St. John Lutheran Church in Grove City - - provides beds to families in need while at the same time sharing the love of Jesus Christ. Advent has continued to be a regular partner in delivering beds the first Saturday of each month. Please consider joining us on September 7th! We meet at the church at 9:30 am. There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex. Indicate if you have a van or pick-up truck that can be used to make the deliveries. Note: it is recommended that volunteers be at least 15 years old. (Contacts: Bob Swinehart and Bob Goldie)
The Loaves and Fish teams work with the Salvation Army (using their canteen truck and kitchen located at 760 Worthington Woods Blvd., Columbus, 43085) to provide hot meals for the homeless and disadvantaged in the Columbus area.  Advent has 3 teams. Each team volunteers twice a year.  Our next date to serve is Sunday, September 8th. Food preparation begins at 2:00 pm at the Salvation Army and loading the canteen truck begins at 4:15 pm. The canteen truck makes 3 designated stops where the meals are distributed. Please sign up in the Narthex if you can join us! Indicate if you prefer to help prepare the meals or deliver them.
