Rival Gods

Identity

Hello, my name is…” How we dress, how we act, what we post on social media, what we do for hobbies, all of these things work together to manage our identity in this world, how others see us, what we want to be known for, what we want to be. As much as we may not want to admit it, we care very much what others say or think about us. Jesus calls us to be His disciples, His followers, His witnesses in this world. These are the identities that He gives us and often they compete with the idolatrous identities we try to embrace in our world. Join us this week as we seek to figure out how we can die to these other identities and embrace those that Christ calls us to.

Daily Prayers, a Digging Deeper guide and coordinating Life Group Curriculum will be available each week on Sunday to further explore this Sermon Series. You can find those resources (and for all of our other sermon series) HERE or at the Welcome Center on Sunday.

Are you interested in a tech class to learn more about our app and other technology we use at the church? Click here to email Sam that you are interested or visit the Welcome Center on Sunday to sign up, date and time to be determined based on interest.

We can't wait to see you for Family Worship & Communion on Sunday!

Service at 10:00am

Worship Center, Friendship Center & Online

Don't forget it's the first Sunday of the month so its Family Worship and we'll be celebrating Communion. If you are joining us from home, don't forget to grab your bread and juice to participate with us in taking Communion during service. Also, the Friendship Center will be open this Sunday, so if we need additional seating or if you would like to spread out at tables, please join us at that end of the building.

As our congregation grows please remember to move to the center of the rows in the Worship Center and leave the aisle seating open for additional people and/or larger families. We have plenty of seating available, but when there are large gaps in the middle of rows it becomes difficult for people to find during the beginning of worship. We thank you for being proactive in welcoming more people into the rows to worship alongside you.

If you or someone you know is NEW to Adventure, please stop by the Welcome Center to pick up a Welcome bag!

Services stream live to three places: our website, our app, and YouTube!

Need help with accessing our livestream? Check out this instruction video or email Sam.

Adventure:Kids News

While the kids in kindergarten and up are upstairs in worship this Sunday, our preschoolers will have a mission-focused lesson and learn about spreading God's love all over the world in many different ways. They will hear a story about missionaries who couldn't travel during the Covid-19 pandemic, so instead they recorded videos sharing the story of Jesus in many different languages.

Our Key Passage is: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:4-5. We'd love to have you work with your child on memorizing this verse at home!

As things have changed over the last few months, we no longer see a need for weekly Adventure:Kids signs ups for our regular attenders. Instead, if you plan to invite a friend, neighbor, or anyone else, please send them this link to register their kids before their first Sunday in Adventure:Kids. This is a one time only form, just to get their child's info in our system for check in: https://faithadventure.breezechms.com/form/AdventureKids

We can't wait to see you this Sunday!

Sermon notes and challenges for families are available on the Adventure: Kids Facebook page,

Church Financial Update

If you're interested in current church finances, see our December graphic included above here. The numbers will be updated for January in the 2/17 newsletter.

Adventure of Faith is a very generous community of believers.

I know this because whenever we communicate a need, we meet it.

On Sunday, January 29th we held a Congregational meeting where CJ (and I) presented the final 2022 fiscal numbers and the new 2023 Adventure of Faith Church budget. There was nothing unexpected in there and the reports seemed well-received. Our deepest desire is for everyone to see clearly how the treasures we receive (giving) are used in ways that align with our Vision, Mission and Values. And that the only way this happens is through the continued generosity of our church family. I appreciate your giving as well as your questions and concerns for our finances.

If you missed the Congregational Meeting you can see the Annual Report HERE, please don't hesitate to ask questions about it if you have any!

Please continue to send your Adventure-related financial questions to me at: [email protected].

This section is a weekly reminder that God is Good!

He is good to us every single day & we will praise His name!

Our God is Good moment this week comes from our Director of Youth Ministries & Pastoral Care, Karen, it's both a celebration of God's faithfulness and a bittersweet announcement:

Nearly 8 years ago I had SUCH a strong call from the Lord to come to an unknown state, where I didn’t know anyone, with no job in store or home. But in full peace that God was calling, I went on an adventure with God to the state of Washington. When you are called, you must always follow! The things God does when He calls are so transformative! I know personally, I feel like a completely different person than who I was when I came here. He is a good and faithful Father! Oftentimes we base a call off of what we want, what is easiest, brings joy or riches, etc. However in my opinion, calls from God are often not easy, often don’t glorify ourselves, often have a major element of trusting in Him and ALWAYS are about loving Him and our neighbor. Recently, I have been feeling very called to go back to Southern California, to my hometown of Long Beach to walk along my family in particular ways, as well as pursuing being a hospital chaplain, starting with schooling. So it was with a bittersweet heart that I decided to follow that call and move back home. This past Sunday at our congregational meeting, my resignation was announced. I believe I was here for a purpose, and that He was faithful in it.

To everyone that I’ve met, I’m so richly blessed! Thank you for impacting my life! Many visits here are planned in the future! I will be here through March! So if you’re free, let’s hang out! I love you Adventure! Thank you for love me and letting me love you!

-Karen

This space in the newsletter is a small way we continue to celebrate the goodness of God all year long, and practice being aware of His presence in our lives. So, if you have stories of God's goodness big or small, hit reply to this email and send them our way. We would love to hear them, pray in praise over them and talk to you about sharing them.

To spur your thoughts to God's goodness start by asking yourself these questions:

What Good have you witnessed recently?

What Good has God brought into your life?

What Good has God prompted you to do for one another?

God is Good!!
