Historical Tidbit:
Kitchen Cook Stove
|
In 1921 my great grandparents paid $225.00 for a new kitchen stove. My great grandmother didn't care for it. She thought it was too big. However, after trying it she kept it about 40 years.
In 1985 when the old stove gave out, her daughter purchased a used wood stove for $65.00. This stove was still in use when the last of the Baker's were living in the old homestead. Since then the new owners of the house have given the stove to the Historical Society. (In 1985 a cord of wood cost $30.00.)
These stoves were not like the wood stove people have today. This was the "kitchen cook stove." One would have to start a fire early in the morning and get the stove heated to just the right temperature before cooking on the stove top or in the oven. There were no controls to set it to preheat. We can only imagine what it took to learn when to take a loaf of bread out so it wouldn't burn or how long to cook a roast. Cooking in the summer took on a whole new meaning.
Some time over the years an electric stove found its way into the Baker kitchen, but the "old" wood stove sat proudly in it's originally place waiting for cold weather to set in so that the warmth from it's wood fire could take the chill out of the air. There is nothing like a wood fire to warm one's bones!
I remember visiting my great grandmother and sitting in the kitchen with my "keds" perched on the "shelf" on the side of the old stove. The heat coming from it felt wonderful. I never gave a thought as to what the heat was doing to the bottom of my sneakers, and yes, I did stick to the floor when I stood up.
