Physicians: Income, Transparency and EHR

     Another mixed bag of advice and news this month, from medtech startups to the folks who consume their stuff - doctors.  Medical technology and medical practice are forever fascinating.  I guess that's why I keep doing what I do.

Advice for Startups
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     I occasionally get asked to judge the merits of grant proposals submitted by early-stage enterprises, most of which are spun out of academic centers.  The quality of these proposals is highly variable.  Some are carefully thought out and wonderfully written.  Others are really quite -- well -- terrible.
     After reviewing a batch of these grant proposals last month, I decided to share a few words of wisdom aimed at startup companies like the ones who authored those proposals.  No deep thought therein, but so many of the obvious points are unaddressed that my simple list is clearly needed by many.
Physicians: Income, Transparency and EHR
     Some interesting info found its way to my desk recently, all of it having to do with doctors.  You may find one or more of these three articles of some interest as well.
     First, Medscape recently published some data dealing with the incomes of physicians in various specialties.  It's rather interesting stuff, especially with regard to the disparities.
     Second, now that Medicare has released data on payments to individual physicians, this new level of transparency has (according to KevinMD.com) opened the hunting season on doctors.  His article explores how these data can often be misleading.  My takeaway: Don't take this information too literally.  Nevertheless, there is much income disparity here as well.
     Finally, who would have thought that the wonderful "copy and paste" function of a word processor could create havoc and drive up Medicare costs and potential fraud in electronic health records (EHRs)?  Well it can.  A New York Times piece makes that case, and convincingly so.
