Registration Renewal, Tabs & Paper Shortages
Dealers were recently notified by CVR of two October 1, 2022 updates to registrations. Dealers were also notified about some challenges due to a national paper shortage.
Two-year registration renewal

Effective October 1, 2022, MDOS began offering a two-year registration renewal option through CVR. Customers transfer renewing their registration may choose the two-year option. All associated fees for both years will be paid with the vehicle transaction. This includes plate fees, recreational passport, hybrid/EV, registration, etc.

Only personally owned or leased vehicles that are not subject to Gross Vehicle Weight Registration are eligible for a two-year renewal.

Important note: the two-year registration is NOT available for:

  • vehicles purchased with a new plate,
  • business owned vehicles, or
  • vehicles subject to Gross Vehicle Weight Registration.

CVR dealers will simply select the "2 year" option from the Registration Year dropdown when customers request this (see image below). The proper amount will be automatically calculated. Again, the two-year option is only available when renewing a registration, so Type of Registration will be either Transfer Renewal, Transfer Renew/Replace, Standard Renewal or Standard Renew/Replace.
A note about 2025 tabs...

The CVR Warehouse has just begun to receive 2025 tabs. Due to a national paper shortage they are coming in slowly. Customers who are scheduled to renew in early 2023 and request the 2-year registration renewal may be affected by this.

If dealers have questions about the new registration option or properly completing the CVR transaction, please contact your CVR AE for more information.
Registration tab redesign

Also effective October 1, 2022, the vehicle registration tab has been redesigned. The tab will now display the expiration year, month, plate number, and Recreation Passport indicator (if applicable).

MDOS will continue to rotate the yearly color of the vehicle registration tabs through the 2024 expiration year. Beginning with the 2025 expiration year, all vehicle registration tabs will be orange.
Print delay for some titles

As reported in the CVR newsletter, due to a national paper shortage, certain titles may not be printed for 8 to 12 weeks.

This should not impact branch activity for dealers requesting resale or instant titles at the branches. Branches should be properly supplied with title stock paper.

Titles with lienholders or registration activity may be those delayed for 8 to 12 weeks. CVR will print a notice of this delay on the TR-11 and RD-108L until the shortage is resolved.

We are in communication with MDOS and CVR and will continue to keep dealers updated as new information is available.
