Greetings Marketing,

NAF is always committed to better supporting the work of advisory boards by listening to your needs and implementing new resources to amplify the work of your team, in providing high-quality and equitable opportunities to students across the country. We’re incredibly excited to welcome the next phase of NAF’s advisory board support: the hiring of Darrell Kain as the newly created Director of Advisory Board Activation!

It's been an honor engaging, learning, and supporting NAF’s advisory boards and I’ll still be advising overall strategy but will be focusing on deepening our national corporate partnerships.

Darrell brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to take local employer engagement and advisory boards to the next level of impact for NAF students.

“I am ecstatic to use my background and experiences to help local partners and advisory boards to be more effective. My experiences prior to NAF include building business partnerships related to STEM education at NC State University and PLTW.

We have several promising new initiatives being planned, so stay tuned for more information! If you are interested in sharing ideas, receiving advice, or scheduling professional development, feel free to contact me at dkain@naf.org.” – Darrell Kain, Director, Advisory Board Activation

Black History Month

February is Black History Month, a celebration of the lives and historic contributions of Black Americans. This month, we are reminded to persist in championing the legacy Black Americans have had on America's history and successes, and the importance of celebrating Black students. As advisory board members, we encourage you to continue to use this opportunity to co-create solutions and spaces that best serve Black students and offer them new experiences to grow and learn.

How can you celebrate Black History Month?

  • This article from ADP lists some great activities that you can do with your board.
  • Highlight local Black figures or advisory board members and have the students learn more about their careers – better yet, invite them to speak to your students!
  • February is also CTE Month -- perfect for researching local workforce development initiatives, with an emphasis on CTE and bringing awareness to how NAF can be a partner in achieving their goals.

How have you celebrated? Let us know!

Dallas ISD Internship Expo

Last month, 46 employer partners kicked off the internship season at the Dallas ISD/NAF Internship Expo, sponsored by Capital One. Many spoke to the power of paid internships and how they benefit students, the local Dallas community, and the US economy. Andrella Thomas, Manager, Social Innovation, Capital One, led a NAF alumni panel where the panelists shared their insights on transitioning from high school to college/career, as well as the importance of completing internships and creating professional connections.

We encourage all advisory boards to host events like this to showcase how local businesses can play a huge part in bolstering the community through high school internships! Want help planning an event? We have resources!

  • Use this planning guide to figure out what you need to host an advisory board event
  • Use this invitation template to recruit employer partners, local community members, and more
