There was a new face at the CEA Advisory Panel Meeting last week. Rob Sturm was appointed to the Advisory Panel earlier this year by Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. Rob is Senior Vice President, Associate General Counsel and Chief Litigation Officer for CSAA Insurance Company. Said Rob, “I found my initial meeting to be highly informative. The presentations were clear and complete, which is particularly helpful for a new member like myself.” During last week’s meeting, Advisory Panel Chairman Mark Simmonds also recognized former longtime members, Russina Sgoureva and Angelica Valenzuela, for their public service and valuable contributions to the panel.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

We all go through difficult times in life, but sometimes hardships become overwhelming and result in an emotional crisis. When people feel there is no way out of their emotional pain, they may become hopeless and consider suicide. Many people who commit suicide communicate their intent ahead of time, and suicide is always a risk for people who show the signs and symptoms of major depression. Look this month for information on the warning signs of suicide and how to help people who are in crisis here or at eap.calhr.ca.gov

Did you know?

September is National Preparedness Month. National Preparedness Month is observed each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.

Disaster Preparedness Month is an annual campaign held every September since 2004 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Natural disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and tornadoes tend to appear at very short notice at any time, necessitating the need for people to prepare accordingly and properly to handle and evacuate from such events safely. For more details, visit DISASTER PREPAREDNESS MONTH -September 2022 - National Today.

Come on in: 801 K Reminders

Feel free to drop by 801K and collect your things, or come in and work at the office. Just as a reminder, you will still need to observe our safety protocols. In addition, you may want to contact our Facilities team ahead of time for assistance (in case things have been moved into storage).

Are you wondering about parking? It’s easy. If you do not have an active parking pass (or if your parking pass doesn’t work when you arrive), you just pull a parking ticket and submit the expense for reimbursement.

CEA and CCRC Board Member Announces Retirement

Last Friday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the upcoming retirement of Mark Ghilarducci, who is a member of CEA and CCRC’s board, and who has served as the Director of the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services since 2012.

Ghilarducci was recognized as having guided California through numerous disasters, including wildfires, droughts, earthquakes, cybersecurity threats, and the pandemic. Glenn spoke about the news in an all staff meeting, saying “He always has so much on his plate but always had time for us. We appreciate what he’s done and wish him the rest he deserves in retirement.”

Chairman of CEA Governing Board and CCRC Governing Board featured in Los Angeles Times profile

You can read all about the amazing career of Mark Ghilarducci, the Chairman of both our Governing Board and the California Catastrophe Response Council's (CCRC) Governing Board, in this week’s media digest. The Los Angeles Times article’s headline says it all, “An exit interview with Mark Ghilarducci, Newsom’s go-to guy in emergencies.” As Director of California’s Office of Emergency Services, Ghilarducci has seen it all—earthquakes, catastrophic wildfires, mass shootings, power outages and more! After a nearly 40-year career in the field of disaster preparedness and emergency management, he has announced he will be stepping down from his current job at the end of this year. All of us at CEA wish him well and are grateful for his outstanding leadership and public service.
