Advocacy: Shaping the Future of Arizona’s Economy

During the State of the Economy presentation earlier this year, speakers shared important information that will shape our community's trajectory and narrative. Here is what was shared:

Economic advocacy plays a critical role in shaping Arizona’s future, particularly as it relates to business growth, workforce development, and overall community well-being. According to the Arizona Economic Outlook, presented by the Economic and Business Research Center at the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management, our state continues to see shifts in economic trends that will impact both businesses and residents.

Arizona’s economy has shown resilience despite national uncertainties, with job growth outpacing the national average. The state added thousands of jobs in key industries, including healthcare, technology, and manufacturing. However, economic disparities persist, with rural areas facing slower employment recovery compared to urban centers like Phoenix and Tucson.

One of the essential tools used to track these economic patterns is the MAP Dashboard, which is comprised of 36 core indicators categorized under Economy, Education, Health & Social Well-being, Infrastructure, Quality of Place, Workforce, and Demographics. This comprehensive data set provides insights into Arizona’s strengths and areas needing improvement, helping policymakers and business leaders make informed decisions.

A significant takeaway from this year’s economic outlook is the continued need for workforce development initiatives. While Arizona maintains a lower unemployment rate than the national average, the demand for a highly skilled workforce remains a challenge. Programs that foster education and vocational training are crucial to ensuring that businesses have access to qualified employees, ultimately strengthening the state’s competitive edge.

Another key topic addressed was Arizona’s infrastructure growth, particularly in transportation and housing. With an increasing population, investments in roads, public transit, and affordable housing solutions are necessary to support sustainable economic expansion. Without these improvements, congestion, rising living costs, and accessibility issues may hinder future growth.

Moreover, the presentation highlighted the impact of demographic changes, including an aging population and shifting migration patterns. Arizona continues to attract retirees, but it must also find ways to retain younger talent by creating vibrant job opportunities and fostering an innovative business climate.

Advocacy efforts must focus on driving policies that promote equitable economic growth, infrastructure investment, and workforce readiness. Business leaders, policymakers, and community stakeholders must work together to push for initiatives that address these economic challenges and opportunities.

By leveraging data from the MAP Dashboard and insights from economic experts, Arizona is better positioned to make strategic decisions that will shape the state’s economic narrative for years to come. Advocacy remains a powerful tool in ensuring that these opportunities translate into meaningful progress for all residents.

ReSources has been selected to participate in the highly anticipated Fast Pitch Tucson event, taking place on April 3rd, 7:00 pm at the Fox Theater, and we would love for you to join us as we showcase our work and impact in the community.

As one of only eight nonprofits chosen, Liana Hicks will represent ReSources and share how our collective efforts are making a difference in the lives of those we serve. During the event, we’ll have three minutes to present our mission, and with the support of community partners like you, we are hopeful that we will secure a portion of the $125,500 in available grants.

One of the exciting features of the evening is the TEP Power to the People Audience Choice Award, which will be determined by audience votes. We believe that having our dedicated stakeholders in the audience—whether virtually or in person—can help us secure this important award. Your presence would amplify our chances of winning and showcase the strength of our partnership.

Additionally, the Hillman Foundation has generously agreed to match all donations made during the event, up to $40,000. This means that your support on the night of Fast Pitch can have double the impact, helping us secure more funding for our programs and initiatives.
