Below is a list of the bills that LSPA is supporting this session:
Funding for Cyanobacteria Mitigation
SB 598: Establishing a cyanobacteria mitigation loan and grant fund task force to study developing a sustainable funding source. This bill takes a critical step toward identifying sustainable, long-term funding solutions needed to address the increasing frequency and severity of cyanobacteria blooms.
HB 1148: Adding cyanobacteria and algae blooms to an existing water quality study committee. This bill brings cyanobacteria and algae blooms into an existing stakeholder forum, strengthening collaboration and improving science-based solutions to a growing water quality threat.
HB 1301: Increasing mooring fees to support the cyanobacteria mitigation loan and grant fund. This bill provides a dedicated, user-based funding source to help communities address cyanobacteria blooms and protect public health and water quality.
HB 1477: Establishing a permit program for anchored seasonal floating platforms.
This bill directs a portion of permit fees toward the cyanobacteria mitigation loan and grant fund.
SB 493: Enabling village districts to address cyanobacteria and water quality issues. This bill gives communities the flexibility to work across municipal boundaries to effectively address water quality challenges that do not follow town lines.
Reducing Pollution from Salt & Chemicals
HB 1607: Improving storage and management of salt and ice control chemicals. This bill helps prevent salt contamination of lakes, groundwater, and drinking water supplies while promoting best management practices for winter roadway maintenance.
HB 1810: Establishing a road salt fee to fund salt reduction best practices. This bill establishes a dedicated funding source to assist municipalities and businesses in reducing salt use while maintaining public safety on winter roads.
Protecting Shoreland
HB 1540: Restoring municipal authority over accessory dwelling units in protected shoreland. This bill restores local municipal authority to manage development near lakes, helping prevent erosion, nutrient pollution, and long-term water quality degradation.
Bills that LSPA Opposes:
HB 1649: Restricting municipal funding to nonprofit organizations. This bill would jeopardize critical funding for local lake management, restoration, and protection programs, including support for lake associations and nonprofit partners that help towns care for their lakes.
