Take Action to Protect Permanent Housing for Our Neighbors

New requirements from HUD may threaten housing for thousands across the country, including more than 800 people in Washtenaw County

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) appears to be preparing to severely restrict the resources it distributes for permanent housing for people coming out of homelessness.

According to reports, the Trump Administration wants to cut funding for permanent housing by about 70%, which would put 170,000 Americans who currently have stable housing at risk of becoming homeless.

The administration's proposed cuts threaten $7 million in funding here in Washtenaw County, which means over 800 of our neighbors could lose their housing.

Permanent supportive housing, like the kind Avalon builds and operates at places like The Grove at Veridian (pictured above), has been proven successful in keeping people who have recently experienced homelessness safe and housed. For example, Avalon has a 95 percent year-over-year retention rate, and nationally the rate is 84 percent. But the administration's proposed cuts would severely restrict our community's ability to invest in these proven ways to address homelessness!

Resistance to these cuts is growing; demands to keep funding at current levels are gaining momentum among both parties. But lawmakers need to hear from you!
