For decades, the William Way LGBT Community Center has been at the heart of Philadelphia's LGBTQ+ community. Now, the Center's longtime home at 1315 Spruce Street is slated for demolition as part of a proposed redevelopment.

But important questions remain unanswered. The project does not yet have secured funding or final plans, and the community has not been given a meaningful opportunity to consider alternatives, including adaptive reuse of the existing building.

A new column in The Philadelphia Inquirer by architectural critic Inga Saffron examines these concerns and the questions surrounding the Center's future.

We believe the William Way LGBT Community Center's Board and leadership have a responsibility to the community that built, sustained, and continues to rely upon this institution.

That's why we're asking you to sign our petition calling on William Way to:

• Pause any irreversible steps toward demolition.
• Fully explore preservation and adaptive reuse alternatives.
• Give the LGBTQ+ community and other stakeholders a meaningful voice in determining the Center's future.

We support investment in William Way, expanded services, and affordable housing for LGBTQ+ seniors. But before an irreplaceable piece of Philadelphia's LGBTQ+ history is demolished, the community deserves to know that every alternative has been considered and every voice has been heard.
