Dear Friends and Supporters,
As the Missouri legislative session begins, we are monitoring many issues that could impact older adults in our community. More than 1,000 bills have already been filed, and we are focused on those that will directly affect our clients and the aging population. At Kansas City Shepherd’s Center (KCSC), we remain steadfast in our commitment to serve all older adults in the Kansas City area, particularly those who face systemic barriers and social isolation, including seniors of color, LGBTQ+ older adults, and those living in poverty.
We are deeply troubled by the wave of proposed legislation that threatens to undermine the well-being, rights, and access to essential services for older adults in Missouri and across the country. Aging services are critical to ensuring dignity and support for everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. Marginalized and isolated older adults often face distinct challenges, such as limited access to healthcare, affordable housing, and other essential resources that enable them to age with dignity and security.
KCSC is dedicated to strengthening our programs, equipping our staff, and collaborating with our partners to better address the needs of these vulnerable populations. Our commitment to inclusivity and compassion drives every service we offer. We proudly stand by our values to advocate for and uphold the dignity, rights, and well-being of every older adult in our community.
One of our initiatives, the LGBTQ+ Bi-Monthly Roundtable, provides a safe and welcoming space for sharing resources, discussing concerns, and building community to ensure that all older adults can age with dignity. For more information about upcoming meetings, please reach out to Sarah Hopkins at sarah@kcshepherdscenter.org.
As we navigate this legislative session and beyond, we remain dedicated to creating a future where all older adults are valued, supported, and empowered to live fulfilling lives. Thank you for standing with us in this important work.
With gratitude,
Janet Carlson Baker, Executive Director
