Chapter Spotlight: Buffalo

On November 13, the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine held its sixth annual "Dentistry Smiles on Veterans Day" during which free dental care was provided by Buffalo dental students, dentists and hygienists to about 200 local military veterans. Care provided included examinations, cleanings, radiographs, restorations and extractions. This event serves veterans who may not have dental insurance and helps them to find a dental home at the school for regular comprehensive care.

Chapter Spotlight: Tufts

This Advocacy Month, Tufts ASDA was honored to host Dr. Lisa Simon, DMD, MD, to kick-start their Advocacy Guest Speaker Series. Dr. Simon engaged students in thoughtful topics regarding medical and dental integration, current policies surrounding Medicare expansion and the value behind building our advocacy toolkits.

As one of many events that Tufts ASDA held during Advocacy Month, they are especially grateful for leaders like Dr. Simon for demonstrating that it is never a wrong time to get back to our grassroots and advocate!

Congratulations to Tufts, Nebraska and Ohio ASDA Chapters

There were so many incredible submissions to our “Oh, the Place the Molar Bear Will Go” video competition! Thanks to everyone who participated. Congratulations to Tufts for earning first place, Nebraska chapter for second place, and Ohio for third place.

FROM WASHINGTON

House passes Build Back Better without Medicare dental benefit expansion

On November 19, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to approve the Build Back Better Act (H.R. 5376, the “BBB Act”), the budget reconciliation bill that includes much of President Biden’s economic and social policy agenda, by a vote of 220 to 212.

As noted in the November issue of Advocacy Brief, this $1.7 trillion spending package includes investments in health care, education, climate change, energy incentives, and more.

Previous versions of this bill included provisions to expand Medicare Part B to include dental coverage. At this time, those provisions have been eliminated from the bill. ASDA, along with the ADA, has advocated since September for a Medicare dental benefit that is sufficiently funded and efficiently administered. We believe a dental benefit within Part B of Medicare would not achieve these goals, and instead advocated for an alternate “Part T” approach. Complete details on ASDA’s interim policy on eldercare can be found in the October issue of Advocacy Brief.

The Senate will now consider the BBB Act that the House passed. If any changes are made, the House will need to vote again before it can go to the president to sign.

Affordable Care Act plan signups approach 2.5 million

Open Enrollment for Affordable Care Act health insurance is happening now. The deadline to enroll in these health insurance plans for 2022 is January 15. As of November 24, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported that nearly 2.5 million people have enrolled in, or renewed, Affordable Care Act plans since open enrollment started on November 1. About 450,000 were new enrollees.

Why is this important?

Many patients are able to afford dental care because of the Affordable Care Act through Medicaid expansion. To date, 38 states and Washington, D.C., have accepted federal funding to expand Medicaid under the ACA.

New Jersey Governor Signs Bill That Will Impact Oral Health Practitioners

On Nov. 8, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) signed A 5212, which permits the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry to allow dentists to administer immunizations to patients age 18 years or older during a public health emergency declared pursuant to the “Emergency Health Powers Act."

Why is this important?

In March, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued the seventh amendment to the Declaration under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act (PREP Act) to authorize dentists and dental students to administer COVID-19 vaccines in all 50 states, regardless of state laws.

ASDA members answered the call and immediately got to work administering the COVID-19 vaccination.

ASDA Advocacy wishes you a happy and healthy holiday season. See you in 2022!
