ADVOCACY NIGHT IN ANNAPOLIS WAS A SUCCESS!

Dear KIPP Family,

I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who were able to come to Advocacy Night in Annapolis this past Tuesday night (we just missed ou r snow day !).  We had over 30 members of our Team & Family participate in, raising our "voices" in support of the  Public Charter School Facility Fund Bill. As a reminder, the proposed legislation could bring as much as $24 million per year to Baltimore City in facilities funding and for us at KIPP, that represents over $2 million per year.

We had over 300 advocates representing public charter schools from across the state in attendance on Tuesday night!  And, we made our voices heard by writing letters to the Senate President Mike Miller, the Speaker of the House Mike Busch, and the Chairpeople of the two committees who will hear the bill in the House and Senate this coming Tuesday. Those letters were delivered yesterday and are making an impact.

What to expect next?

The next steps in the process will be public hearings on the bill on this Tuesday, February 26th at 1 pm in Annapolis.  A number of public charter schools will be offering testimony and KIPP will be well represented!

Between now and Tuesday, it is very important that our legislators hear from us in support of this bill.  If you have not done so already, please write an email to legislative leadership, specifically Speaker Michael Busch, Senate President Mike Miller, Delegate Maggie McIntosh, and Senator Paul Pinsky to support this bill.  Below, I have provided sample language that you can use in an email and the email addresses for each!

As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.

Kindly,

Email to Legislators

Dear X,

I'm writing to you today to share my support for House Bill 156/Senate Bill 172, the Public Charter Schools Facilities Fund. This legislation creates equitable facilities funding for public charter schools, bringing over $36 million in new funding for District schools across the state. Unlike traditional public schools, we do not have facilities funds to maintain our school building.

INSERT A PERSONAL REASON WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT TO YOU AND YOUR KIPPSTERS!

Please support HB 156/SB172, the Public Charter Schools Facility Fund. Thank you.

Sincerely,
X
