Friends,

As an elected county prosecutor, my responsibility goes far beyond standing in a courtroom and putting criminals behind bars. I am entrusted with upholding more than 500 constitutional and statutory mandates, protecting my community, standing up for victims, and advocating for meaningful, positive change.

Today, I want to share a few accomplishments I am especially proud of.

First is the work I have done with K9 victim advocates. I have had two K9 advocates serve in my office. Our first was a Black Lab named Reagan, and today we are proud to have Stryder. My office was one of the first in the state to incorporate a K9 victim advocate, whose sole responsibility is to support children and young adults who have been victims of some of the most serious crimes imaginable.

In 2018, I had the opportunity to work with my state representative at the time, now Congressman Tom Barrett, to pass HB 5645. This legislation allowed K9 victim advocates into courtrooms across Michigan. Reagan and Stryder have not been limited to Eaton County. They have traveled to Michigan State University, Oxford, and other communities to support students and families grieving after major tragedies.

I have also worked closely with a good friend, Xavier DeGroat, and the Xavier DeGroat Autism Foundation to help pass laws that bridge the communication gap between law enforcement and individuals with autism. Xavier is an outstanding young man and was the first individual with autism to intern at the White House, working for President Trump during his first term. Together, we have advanced additional initiatives to improve communication between law enforcement, government agencies, and individuals with special needs, making a real difference in people’s lives.

Lastly, when members of the Legislature attempted to pass laws that weakened the criminal justice system and put public safety at risk, I stood with House Republicans to fight back. I worked closely with Judiciary Chair Graham Filler to oppose these progressive reforms, often stepping in to do the work our Attorney General should have been doing. As a result of my efforts in both the Legislature and the courtrooms of Eaton County, I was honored with the Champion for Crime Victims Award, presented by the Crime Victims Foundation.

What delegates need to understand is this: being Attorney General is about far more than standing at a podium and talking about who to sue next. It is about leadership, advocacy, and the courage to speak up for victims and the voiceless.

I have done that throughout my career as a prosecutor, and I will continue to do so as your next Attorney General.

Sincerely,

Doug Lloyd
