Hello MARC Family.
Greetings and Salutations!
I hope this day finds you, your families and coworkers safe, healthy and happy.
As Spring has arrived, so has the vaccine. As a result, restrictions are being lifted and slowly we are returning to what we would consider normal.
I encourage you to get your vaccines if you have not already and educate your residents and coworkers as to the benefits.
With that in mind, I am truly excited to visit with our MARC family in Pennsylvania in a few weeks as they have their Spring Conference in person from June 6-9. Please look for information about this exciting event further in this newsletter.
While we are all trying to get our offices caught up and opened up, do not forget to keep your staff up to date and trained with NAHRO Professional Development offerings. Please do not forget that MARC is part of the revenue sharing program with national, so by helping your staff you are helping MARC. Apply the regional code when registering—MARC2020.
With MARC being a leader in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, I also wanted to acknowledge May being Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Please help all our MARC AAPI brothers and sisters celebrate the pride in their heritages.
MARC did a TREMENDOUS job during August advocacy last year. We were easily the most improved region. Please read the section in this newsletter concerning advocacy for May and consider it a practice run for August when MARC will show how much we can deliver!
Also, start saving the date. Right now, plans are for the NAHRO National conference to be a hybrid event, including in person and getting to see each other. Please monitor your local and agency protocols and think about joining your colleagues in Phoenix from October 7-9.
Hopefully, we will have some exciting things happening over the summer to share with you.
Please continue to stay safe and healthy.
And....
THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO !!

Advocate
After years of discussing the need to invest in the nation’s infrastructure, Congress is finally gearing up to move forward with a wide-scale infrastructure package. There is no guarantee that housing will be included! We need you to support infrastructure funding for housing and community development programs. It is an easy, simple process--visit our Action Alert Center and follow the prompts!
NAHRO is aiming to send 3,000 letters to Congress and the White House by Memorial Day - visit NAHRO’s Action Alert Center or download the mobile Advocacy App to send your letters today!
Three main talking points from the campaign:
- This year, Congress is working on a large infrastructure bill. We need NAHRO advocates to help convince Congress that Housing Is Infrastructure, so that funding for housing programs is included in the final version of the bill.
- President Biden proposed the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan as his version of what Congress should include in the infrastructure bill. The American Jobs Plan includes $213 billion for affordable housing preservation and development.
- The biggest infrastructure priority for NAHRO members is the Public Housing Capital Fund. We estimate that the Capital Fund backlog is at least $70 billion. The American Jobs Plan includes $40 billion for the Capital Fund, which we are urging Congress to include in the final version of their infrastructure bill.

"What Home Means to Me” Poster Contest
|
|
Since 2008, this contest has recognized the amazing, poignant art of children who live in affordable housing across the country. Each year, hundreds of children, ages 5-18, participate in the contest. Their heartfelt messages about what their homes means to them underscore the importance of the work that housers and community development professionals do.
The final contest, conducted in Washington, D.C., is the culmination of numerous poster contests held by public housing authorities all across the United States. Three judges choose 13 winners from hundreds of entries to be featured in NAHRO’s “What Home Means to Me” calendar.
All winners receive cash prizes. The grand prize winner, whose art is featured on the calendar cover, will also receive a trip to NAHRO’s Washington Conference to meet our membership and his/her Congressional representative.
Deadlines announced by states are:
New Jersey – June 9: Contact: Yetla Martinez – Newark Housing Auth., 500 Broadway, Newark, NJ 07102-3112
