The Power of Advocacy

Several young girls all under the age of five, entered the protective umbrella of CASA in 2024. Their future was uncertain, and their young lives had already experienced more instability than any child should. Yet there was hope.

That hope came through the dedication of their CASA/GAL volunteer, Janis, and the love of a grandmother determined to keep them safe.

When the children's mother came under DCFS supervision and temporarily lost custody, their grandmother stepped forward.

Throughout the case, Janis stood beside the family, advocating for the girls' best interests and ensuring their needs remained at the center of every decision. She supported the grandmother through court hearings, connected the family to resources, and provided the court with recommendations focused on the children's safety and stability.

After nearly two years of advocacy and care, a major milestone was reached this summer, when guardianship was finalized, making the grandmother the girls' legal guardian.

Today, the sisters are thriving. They enjoy school and daycare, ride their bikes, laugh and play together, and love Barbie, Hello Kitty, colorful braids, and brightly painted nails. They are building happy childhood memories and looking forward to the future.

Stories like this remind us why CASA's mission matters. One dedicated volunteer can help change the trajectory of a child's life.

Now these little girls have the security of a loving home, a devoted grandmother, and a brighter future made possible by a CASA volunteer who never stopped advocating for them.
