Living Language Circle 2015

Native Language Teacher Conference

This year's Living Language Circle conference was once again graciously hosted by Yocha Dehe in the beautiful Capay Valley. Chairman Leland Kinter, Todd Gettleman, Nakia Zavalla, Coty Pata, and AICLS board member, Vincent Medina were some of the key people help organize the wonderful conference.
This year's Living Language Circle had several great presentations, workshops, and activities. Elder Bertha Mitchell open up the conference prayer in Wintun. Chairman Leland Kinter welcomed everyone and talked about the Yoche Dehe language programs. With Cody Pata as the MC everything was smooth, informative, and fun. Nakia Zavalla was instrumental in the development of AB 544 American Indian language teaching credential and AB 163 American Indian culture teaching credential. Each participant received a certificate of completing eight hours of professional teaching standards training.

Several presenters, panelists, and language advocates and professionals acknowledged that AICLS was a starting inspiration for them. Both AICLS Breath of Life workshop and the Language is Life gathering changed many peoples lives. This year's Language is Life will be on September 18-20 this year.

The commerce of trade items once encouraged linguistic vibrancy in traditional California. The Living Language Circle showed the same encouragement with Doiyuperri traditional trading.
Doiyuperri Traditional Trading.

  "Language is Love"

We are grateful to have as our Keynote Speaker, Natalie Diaz,
Mojave language worker and National Poetry Award Winner
for her book of poetry, "When My Brother Was An Aztec."

This year's theme of "Language is Love" was greatly inspired by her essay, " If What I Mean Is Hummingbird, which started a dialogue on how languages express love, emotion, respect, affection, deep thought, humor, nurturing language, baby language, language in the arts, and language in relationships, and how these are taught in California Indian communities.

We will feature our Keynote Speaker on Friday evening, then half-day Workshops starting Saturday, that highlight the theme of "Language is Love", such as a home-schooling and language in the home.  A Youth Track will be available for attendees 17 years and under, with language games and a video-documentation project.  This year, we encourage Community Reports on your language revitalization activities, and presentations that address the theme.  Make sure you have space reserved for this exciting gathering!

Lodging at Wonder Valley is varied.  Accommodations are shared cottages, cabins and rooms sleeping 4-6 or dorm style rooms sleeping up to 10.  There is very limited availability of single and double rooms with private baths.  Conference registration includes 2 nights lodging and meals from dinner on Friday through lunch on Sunday.
