The Future of Work is Diverse, Inclusive, Just and Equitable

GlobalMindED closes the equity gap by creating a capable, diverse talent pipeline through connections to role models, mentors, internships for low-income students, returning adults, First Gen to college and inclusive leaders who teach them, work with them and hire them.
Advocating for Equitable Health Care for Indigenous People: Meet Mackenzie Daybutch - Coordinator of Canadian Regional Indigenous Cancer Center

Today we are honored to introduce you all to Mackenzie Daybutch. She is an Ojibway member of Mississauga First Nation in Ontario, Canada. Her work as a Social Worker, Child and Youth Counselor, and as a mother have shaped her into the leader she is today.

What key moments defined you as a leader?

When I was 18 years old I had to move away from my treaty territory to pursue my post-secondary education. I was 4 hours away from my culture, family, and community. During the years I was away, I completed my social service worker diploma. Once I graduated from this, I felt that my learning journey was not complete. I realized I had a passion for working with youth and completed my Child and Youth Counseling diploma and also an Indigenous Studies certificate. This lead me even further away from my home territory.

After completing my education, I was honored to work with youth that were living with mental health challenges, addictions and various disabilities. I was introduced to working with our Indigenous population in our Nation’s capital as an intensive case manager and crisis counselor. Currently, I work at one of the largest hospitals in Canada’s capital where I am the program coordinator for our Regional Indigenous Cancer Program.

When I began my journey working at the hospital, I came knowing the inter-generational trauma and current trauma with Indigenous populations and accessing health care, specifically, equitable health care. Keeping this in mind, I have facilitated various corporate discussions regarding barriers to Indigenous health equity and cultural safety. I implemented the first Indigenous Employee’s Network at the hospital. I felt there was a need for a safe space for the Indigenous employees of this large corporation to have a place to talk and support each other.

How do you connect with your ancestral roots professionally and personally?

Being 8 hours away from my home territory and in a city of over 1 million people, it is important for me to connect and remember where my roots are and why I am doing the work that I am doing - for our people.

My current role allows me to advocate for equitable health care for Indigenous peoples living in the Nation's Capital. I advocate for person-centered care with a cultural lens. Patients are able to smudge with our traditional medicines in the hospital, with a dedicated space for them that has installed ventilation systems. Additionally, I am always speaking our truth and reminding other professionals of historic trauma regarding hospitals and health care. Personally, I have sacred medicines in my home and use them regularly in order to keep me balanced.

As a leader, what motivates you to move forward in adversity? Where do you find your passion?

I am passionate about helping and advocating for our people. When I hear instances of injustice or inequity, it fuels my fire. My work is not done until we are in a world of compassion, understanding and decolonization.
