Advocating for the Rights of Disabled People with Service Dogs: Meet
Cathy Burds

Observed each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) celebrates the contributions of America's workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices that benefit employers and employees.

What is your personal/professional story?

Justice Speaks advocates for disabled people with service dogs, protecting their right to an assistance animal in all public spaces and educating the broader community about this fundamental—and life-changing—civil liberty.

I founded Justice Speaks eight years ago. A service dog transformed my life.

As a survivor of childhood trauma living with PTSD and a hearing disability, I felt isolated and separated from the rest of the world—it wasn’t built for people like me. That is until Justice came into my life.

With Justice, a Bernese Mountain Dog I trained as a service animal, I had the confidence and ability to live more independently, participate in new activities and events, and expand my world. But it hasn’t been easy.

Many people and businesses were unaccommodating or tried to deny me the right to have a service animal with me at all. I faced everything from total ignorance of what a service animal is, to blatant discrimination. I knew something needed to be done to help change public understanding and perception so that people with disabilities could move freely in their communities with their life-changing service animals by their side.

In 2015, I started the nonprofit Justice Speaks, and in 2020 the program expanded to focus on education. Through education, advocacy, and resource connection, me and my team are building a path towards a better world for disabled individuals and their service animals. Because when people like me with disabilities are able to participate, everyone wins.

What key moments in your life led you to where you are today?

At different times in my life, I have had epiphanies. I was taught to hide my hearing impairment so I wouldn't be made fun of or thought of as less than. My parents did their best to protect me until I couldn't hide it anymore. The result was life-changing.

Where does your passion to serve come from?

Injustice hurts me and others. I have always had the influence of "Finding Justice" and I have, in many ways. My first service dog is named Justice because that is what I find to be the happiest form of existence, living Justly! Justice can come in many forms in our life. I think it is necessary to have Justice!!

How can GlobalMindED help you reach your goals?

Spreading education about Service Dog Etiquette helps accessibility for everyone, not just the hearing impaired or those with invisible disabilities, but anyone with a disability. GlobalMindED can continue to invite those to speak that work with disability equity. The more we have education the more equitable our world will become!!
