At The Carey School, preparing Pre-K students for the seamless transition to Kindergarten is a journey that infuses academic foundations into playful exploration, fosters social-emotional skill-building, and empowers children with responsibility and independence. By fostering a blend of child-led exploration and teacher-guided instruction, we ensure that our youngest learners are equipped with the skills and confidence necessary to thrive in their next Carey chapter.
Academically, our approach centers on an emergent curriculum that integrates literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies through multiple inquiry cycles. We guide children to observe, wonder, and explore, encouraging them to share their reflections and act upon their discoveries. A cornerstone of this preparation is our focus on foundational literacy, developed through specialized Alphabet Cycles and Story Workshop. Students engage in repeated phonological awareness and alphabetic principles, building early reading and writing skills. They learn to identify story elements, understand sequencing, and develop sound-symbol connections, often using "best guess" spelling to represent their ideas through both text and illustration. In mathematics, we focus on counting, comparing, and decomposing numbers, alongside patterns, geometry, and data collection. This work is intentionally designed to build the independence and stamina required for both small-group and whole-group Kindergarten environments.
The social-emotional development of our students is equally vital to their growth. We strive to create a strong sense of belonging where every child feels seen and valued. For four- and five-year-olds, navigating fairness is a common part of group learning. We support children in developing a strong sense of voice, teaching them to use "I-messages" and restorative language to express their needs and feelings. Through our work in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), children explore their own identities and communities, asking questions like "Who am I?" and "Who is part of my story?". This fosters an emerging understanding of fairness and community care. We also emphasize a growth mindset, helping students strengthen their resilience by taking risks, navigating challenges, and learning the value of trying again. Collaborative play and shared problem-solving are central to these lessons, ensuring students feel safe to be curious and joyful.
Finally, we intentionally develop routines that empower children to manage daily transitions with increasing autonomy. We gradually raise expectations for self-help skills, such as managing personal belongings, following multi-step directions, and independently handling tasks like cleaning up after lunch or rest time. We focus on things like staying on task and staying organized so students can get comfortable with the day-to-day flow of school life. Whether it is changing shoes or gathering materials for a project, these small acts of responsibility build the self-reliance that is a hallmark of a successful Kindergarten student. Through this intentional, multi-faceted approach, we ensure that every PK student at Carey transitions to Kindergarten with a deep love of learning and the tools to succeed.
