By: The Black/ African-American Faculty and Staff Affinity Group
Next week, we are excited to launch a school-wide celebration of Black History, with the intent of providing resources that will continue building home-school connections. This initiative grew from an idea within our faculty’s Black/African-American affinity group—a vision to recognize Black history in a way that feels relevant and meaningful to our students today.
Too often, Black history is framed as distant, highlighting leaders of the past who lived in a world that seems far removed from our students' lives. While these trailblazers laid the foundation for progress, we want to shine a light on those who continue their legacy—the changemakers, innovators, and leaders shaping the world today.
Throughout the coming weeks, students will engage in activities that connect historical achievements with modern-day figures across various fields, from science and the arts to activism and sports. We will make a post on Instagram each school day in February, starting Monday, February 3 which will share information about the people we discussed at school. The goal is to foster conversations to extend beyond the classroom, encouraging families to explore Black History as a living, evolving story that we are all a part of. Each will have a connect-and-create activity you can ask your child about. Click here to view the people we will study and suggested activities. The T.V. on each slide contains a short related video.
We invite you to join us in this journey by engaging in discussions at home, exploring additional resources, and sharing family stories that may connect to the themes we examine in class. Together, we can help students see history not just as something to remember but as something they are a part of.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support in making meaningful experiences for our school community.
