First-Time Homebuyer program

Anyone in the market to buy a home in Massachusetts can tell you two things:
  1. It's a seller's market out there.
  2. The entire process is daunting, particularly for first-time homebuyers.

SCC's First-Time Homebuyer program helps potential buyers prepare for these and other challenges. Recent graduate

Gilmore Tamny, who is closing on her first home any day now, shares her experience of the process. "In a market that is terrifying, I felt supported, encouraged and respected the whole time," she says. Read more.

As I shared in my last CEO Forum  post,  escalating  housing prices in our City are threatening the socioeconomic, racial and ethnic diversity that makes Somerville such a desirable
community.  This issue of SCC eNews looks at the ways we are preserving and constructing affordable housing for those most vulnerable to displacement.

Read about a project that is maintaining affordable housing stock in Somerville's Union Square. Learn about the organizing work of the Affordable Housing Organizing Committee (AHOC). And hear more about SCC's Social Equity Campaign as a way for individuals to deepen SCC's impact by making donations with a 70% tax return.

Meet a recent First-Time Homebuyer program graduate who is closing on her new home any day now. And get updates on upcoming SCC workshops,  the SCC video project, and more.

From all of us at SCC, thank you for your support.

PS -- If you enjoy the SCC eNews, please forward this issue to a friend so they can begin to receive regular updates on what's happening in our City.

Social Equity Campaign: It's House Party Time!
You are invited to an upcoming house party to learn how you can make a high impact investment to SCC's Social Equity Campaign through the Community Investment Tax Credit (CITC) program. Interested in attending?

Call us and we'll connect you with one of our hosts.  You can learn more about these events or how to make a donation here.

SCC's much anticipated Union Square affordable housing property at 181 Washington Street is nearing completion.

Project Manager Yara Vergucht informs us, "We are in the final days of construction and shortly will have the certificate of occupancy." She says that "everyone is excited to move in" to these one-, two- and three-bedroom units and anticipates that everyone will be in their new homes by the holidays.  Read more.

SCC Video: We Succeed Together
The much-anticipated Somerville Community Corporation video is nearing completion. The short video tells the story our city's residents through 3 vignettes of people facing all too-familiar struggles, and the power of unity.

We will email you an invitation to an exclusive online release party. So keep an eye out for your invitation, and be part of the social media event!

State Awards Grant for Clarendon Hill

SCC and the team renovating and developing the Clarendon Hill project on North Street in Somerville received a $300,000 design and planning grant last month from the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development to support predevelopment planning activities for the redevelopment of the site.

As always, we appreciate feedback.  Be sure to join us on Facebook & Twitter for the most current info on what we're up to and how to get involved. We look forward to seeing and hearing from you soon!

Sincerely,
