Afghan Refugee Update

food box.jpg

You, our wonderful community in SoCal and beyond, have recognized Uplift Charity as your trusted zakat administrator since 2006. Even today, a decade and a half later, we continue to distribute 100% of your zakat donations directly to the thousands of families that we empower to become self-sufficient every day. That includes refugees from around the world, local widowed or battered single parents and families otherwise struggling financially.

Since 2021, Uplift Charity has been designated an official Refugee Resettlement Agency partner, the very first in SoCal. This is an honor and a big responsibility; we are responsible for the well-being and success of refugee families entering our community. Since the designation, we have settled 350 refugees from Afghanistan in a short three month time period. This year we expect another 100 refugees from different parts of the world. We will continue to work closely with our partners, our community – you – and government agencies to ensure #WelcomeRefugees a smooth transition and successful integration into our community.

"Uplift Charity has helped my family in so many ways, we finally feel like we are home."

Since 2006, Uplift Charity has been making a difference in the lives of the underprivileged in our local neighborhoods. We seek to assist those in need by empowering them with the tools, support and resources necessary to impact their long-term success. Uplift Charity is committed to making a difference and being a vehicle to enlist those in the community who strive to make a real difference with their time and/or resources. At Uplift Charity, we understand that helping the underprivileged segment of society is the responsibility of the local community and that our best effort today will lead to a better tomorrow. Eleven-year-old Zainab, an Afghan refugee who is learning English, nails the question the moment she hears it. "How many notebooks in the classroom?" her teacher asks. "There is one notebook in the classroom," she says, her voice halting because of the new language but confident because she knows the answer.

Given the housing crisis, pandemic and difficult tenancy requirements, we urge the community to help by providing housing in small or large ways based on their ability.

Quickly matching allies with employment opportunities and safe housing is integral for attaining self-sufficiency. Please contact Uplift if you have any hiring opportunities.

We urge community members who are able to host refugees to consider being a buddy. Any assistance within your ability is impactful and we are optimistic that by working together, newly-arrived Afghans will have the opportunity at a safe and prosperous life. You can assist in the following ways:

  • Housing (host, co-sign & furniture)
  • Post-arrival (school enrollment, job mentorship & transportation)

                                                                                                                              Advocate!

To protect the rights of Afghan allies, contact your local and federal government representatives today. Ask the government to increase the capacity on the number of refugees to be settled. Demand that Afghans who were evacuated to the United States receive the same rights as refugees and SIVS.
