African Adventure
Perhaps only those who have been to Africa can appreciate the grandeur of the scenery and the vast array of animals. Several of us were fortunate enough to spot and take pictures of the Big 5—the Elephant, Lion, Cape Buffalo, Rhinoceros, and Leopard. In our case, we were extremely fortunate to be able to see not only Rhinos but also the rare Black Rhino. Our adventure took us from South Africa to Eswatini, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. We enjoyed 7 game drives and 3 river cruises on this fast-paced journey of almost 3 weeks, with Kruger National Park, Chobe National Park, and Victoria Falls being some of the highlights. The pictures might give just a taste of the wide variety of animals we enjoyed and even a few pix of a family of monkeys cavorting on the balcony of one of our lodge rooms.
Join Us! West Coast—East Coast: We are delighted to announce two adventures that can be enjoyed separately or together. First, a 10-Day Rocky Mountaineer journey featuring three days on the train with Gold Leaf Service beginning in Vancouver and going to Whistler, Quesnel, and ending in Jasper, September 26 - October 5, 2024. The land portion includes a day in Jasper, a visit to the Abathasca Glacier and the Glacier Skywalk, two days in Banff at the luxurious Rimrock Hotel, a ride on the Banff Gondola (weather permitting), then on to Calgary. This adventure continues with a New England Turning Leaves cruise from Boston to Quebec, sailing on the Emerald Princess from October 7 - 17, 2024. More specific information is contained later in the newsletter. Again, these journeys can be enjoyed together or individually.
In other cruise news, as the European summer season starts up, the much-anticipated debut of Virgin Voyages’ third ship, Resilient Lady, is here. Resilient Lady makes her debut on May 14, 2023. The seven-night MerMaiden voyage (May 14-21) features the “Greek Island Glow” itinerary, which departs from Athens and includes stops in Santorini, Rhodes, Bodrum, and an overnight in Mykonos before returning to Athens. Of course, you are welcome to Join Us on our Virgin Voyages cruise in January.
TSA recently revealed its plans for facial recognition screening. It aims to streamline security screening, and it gave a demonstration of the tech to the media at the Baltimore-Washington airport. The technology is also being trialed at 15 other airports. “We are aiding the officers to determine that you are who you say you are," said Jason Lim, the identity management capabilities officer. Travelers put their driver’s licenses or passports into the scanner. It is then read while a camera takes a picture of the face to compare. This is another of the biometric programs being rolled out across the nation.
