How did your passion for innovation develop?
My passion for innovation developed around the age of 9 years old when I discovered that I love teaching and writing plays. When I was 9, my teaching included instructing my dolls but they were definitely my first students! As a fourth grader, I was the student that wrote all of the class plays for any history subject we were studying. When I look back, I realized the power of storytelling at an early age. Fast forward, and now I incorporate documentary filmmaking into accounting education which led me to directing my award-winning documentary All the Queen’s Horses in 2017. My documentary screened on Netflix from 2018-2019 in every English speaking territory around the world. The film won two HBO Best documentary film festival awards, competed in 12 international film festivals, and is currently utilized in undergraduate accounting courses across the United States and Canada.
What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is influenced by two driving forces: my passion for creativity and the belief that every student has talents that will add value to the world. I also believe that every student wants to learn. Since students have multiple learning styles, my job is creating an engaging learning environment so that students can learn. I design my courses using the science of storytelling to engage, influence and teach accounting concepts to undergraduate accounting majors, graduate accounting majors and corporate learners. I use the pedagogy of storytelling because “a story is the only way to activate parts in the brain so that a listener turns the story into their own idea and experience.” I create a safe classroom environment where students can use stories as an opportunity to apply important accounting and business concepts before entering the workforce.
How do you promote innovation?
I promote innovation by turning my research into film and videos to add to the educational materials currently available. I chronicle my innovations through social media and op-eds, as I believe in contagious, shareable change. Based in my forensic accounting research, I created my TED-Ed lesson entitled “How people rationalize fraud,” which is used by K-12 educators and higher education. The lesson has been viewed over 276,000 times and has been used by 248 educators generating over 13,000 questions answered globally. My TED Talk “How whistleblowers shape history” has been viewed over 1.6 million times and translated into 20 languages. These platforms are an outstanding way to promote innovation.
What drives you?
It is the feedback from my students that drives me. My former graduate research assistant describes me as “always looking for new and exciting methods to educate students in the best way possible.” Another former student stated that I motivated and inspired her to obtain a Ph.D. in accounting by being the living proof of her aspirations. My motivation is to irrevocably impact student learning outcomes and broaden overall access to scholarship. One of my proudest moments to date was delivering the 2019 Fall Commencement speaker at my alma mater, North Carolina A&T State University (NC A&T SU). Addressing the 2019 graduating class at the Greensboro Coliseum, the exact place where I received my degree 25 years earlier, is truly an indescribable feeling. I delivered my commencement address alongside Chancellor Harold S. Martin and shook the hand of every graduate.’ My constant desire is to be the best college professor, accounting professional and global citizen I can be.

GlobalMindED and the SDG Impact Fund are delighted to announce GlobalMindED's Donor Advised Fund. 2020 is the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations and the 25th Anniversary of the Beijing Women's Declaration and Action Platform. Many from around the world are thinking of 2020 as the gateway to our most vital decade for delivering equity, the Sustainable Development Goals, and a world where all can thrive. Our key time for these outcomes is 2020-2030.
GlobalMindED DAF and the SDG Impact Fund are a powerful combined force for good as the 2019 year comes to a close and we reflect on the gratitude and the commitments we make to the causes we care most about. The DAF offers immense power and flexibility for giving prior to the year's end as you plant seeds of generous intention for 2020 and the decade ahead.
When you contribute to GlobalMindED, you support First Gen students. We have served more than 400 students by connecting them to role models, mentors, internships and jobs. Your generous support will allow us to take our work 10x and reach these talented students at scale who lack the resources and support we provide. Your support also helps teachers who can't afford the conference fees, faculty at colleges which are under resourced and students who persist at those universities despite food insecurity and/or housing insecurity.

THE FLYOVER NATION
Energy's Role in a Troubled Heartland
By J.C. Whorton
A unique and timely discussion of the challenging issues facing the country’s troubled Heartland.
Since the beginning of westward expansion into the Heartland’s vast regions, natural resource development has played a historic role in shaping its communities. Today, domestic oil and gas development offers one of the strongest prospects for the Heartland’s present and future prosperity as well as the nation’s re-emergence as a dominant player in the global energy economy.
The U.S. is now the world’s largest producer of crude oil and natural gas, two circumstances that are universally disrupting international geopolitical order. The earth has a finite supply of natural resources and a rapidly growing and over consuming population.
As America positions itself for a very uncertain and constantly evolving global marketplace, will the Heartland become America’s “great connector” or “great divide”?
