Mary Lee's first book illustrates her personal turnaround as a stay-at-home mother, with four children under seven-years-old, who endured a divorce that took she and the children from the country club life to public assistance. From there, within a short time, she worked to the level of CEO, directing three hospital foundations over the last 16 years each with assets of up to $26 million.

Many of you know from my books that I have been a single parent of four children since 1995 and with focused priorities, reflection and strategy I was able to rise from welfare and homelessness to be CEO of organizations worth up to $26 million. Much of my journey was a career trajectory that required dedication, networking, and executive perspective - all strategies I share with you in these newsletters. What had the most profound impact on my effectiveness and my own happiness was on the personal side - mindful development of self-awareness, listening skills, self-management and empathy. It is difficult to listen and be empathetic to yourself let alone others when you feel threatened, oppressed, disrespected, powerless, trapped, and without the ability to make significant headway in your own life.
 
How do you remain open in the face of disappointment? How do you uncover opportunity when you can't see any light at the end of the tunnel? How do you support those who you manage, parent, lead, and befriend when your empathy well is dry?
 
Next month on November 29th I will get married after having been a single parent for 19 years. Over that time I had pretty much aced the art of ending up at the top in the career category. I learned very early to be focused, purposeful, committed and results driven. But it was much harder for me to get an "A" in the relationship category because I had spent so many years working on how to shut people out to preserve my sanity. Unfortunately I got very good at the shut-down mode and had to work twice as hard at opening that valve as I did at being successful in business.  
 
What I discovered is that every day I put development of my "people" skills on hold distanced me farther from what really matters most in life - how we touch other people. I thought that personal achievement was enough and found out in short order that success in my career hinged not on what I was able to do alone - but in how I am able to move others. Developing my comfort level with my own vulnerability enabled me to not only let go of tired habits but made me more approachable. As I cleared my ears to hear my own voice I better heard the voices of others. I didn't have to be right - just open. I didn't have to know all the answers - just listen. I didn't have to do it all myself - just get out of the way of good people. The funny thing is - this not only propelled my success it opened my heart. And there I found love.
