Albuquerque- Four years ago today, Donald Trump directed a violent mob to storm our nation’s Capitol, attacking law enforcement and threatening our democratic institutions, resulting in 140 injured public safety officers and several deaths. Today, Congress convened to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election, an important function of American Democracy, respected by Democrats time after time.
Donald Trump has since suggested imprisoning the US House members of the bipartisan January 6th Commission, which voted unanimously to refer Trump for federal prosecution, for their role in investigating the insurrection. Trump campaigned on a promise to pardon many of the insurrectionists who were charged with crimes for their role in the riot, including disgraced former Republican Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin.
Unlike Trump, Democrats will remain steadfast in our support of the democratic values our country was founded on and will always work to ensure that our democratic institutions continue to serve the American people, win or lose. Disgracefully, cowardly Republicans who are afraid of Trump refuse to denounce the January 6th insurrection, even though he supported calls to hang Vice President Mike Pence on that day.
As we recall Trump’s childish and destructive behavior on January 6th, 2021, DPNM reaffirms our commitment to supporting the public safety personnel who put their lives on the line to keep our democratic institutions safe and calls on all those serving in our highest offices to denounce any violent attack on our democracy so it can never happen again. Going into his second term, Trump may try to rewrite the history of the attack on the US Capitol and his role on that day, making it all the more imperative that Democrats remember.
