And Adam named his wife Eve. (Genesis 3:20)
Up until Genesis 3:20, Eve had no name. She was referred to simply as "the woman." There was no need for Adam to name his wife until after they had sinned, which is referred to as "the Fall."
One must realize that up until the Fall in Genesis 3:1-19, Adam and the woman were living in paradise enjoying life with all their needs being met. Adam and the woman were of one spirit. Therefore, they could relate to each other without the need to call each other by name. What one wanted to say, the other already knew. What one needed, the other knew without words. Besides, they were the only humans in the Garden of Eden. So, there was no need for a direct address.
HOWEVER, after the Fall everything changed.
- After the Fall, they lost their innocence.
- After the Fall, they broke fellowship with God.
- After the Fall, they severed their relationship with each other.
- After the Fall, they lost their perfect relationship with nature.
- After the Fall, they had to wear clothes to hide their nakedness.
Let's be thankful that after the Fall, Jesus Christ, the second Adam, came to redeem us from everything that was lost in the Fall.
