Liberty After the Recall: The ACLU of Wisconsin's efforts before and after the recall election

Greetings!

The recall election that consumed Wisconsin's attention is over. The fight for civil liberties, however, is not over. Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch remain in office, but with new leadership in the State Senate, checks and balances may be able to stop new anti-civil liberties initiatives at the Capitol. This political situation creates a window of opportunity for our efforts to protect civil liberties. With your help, we can make a difference.

Please make a gift to the ACLU of Wisconsin Foundation today to help us protect liberty in Wisconsin. Here are a few examples of our current priorities:

  • Our efforts to overturn violations of civil liberties by means of litigation, such as our federal lawsuit challenging the new Voter Photo ID requirement, will continue.
  • Our efforts to educate the public, especially young and minority voters, will be running full-steam ahead through the November elections. We distributed over 50,000 Voter Protection flyers mostly in minority communities before the recall.
  • Our efforts to use legal observers to protect your right to protest, whether you're at the State Capitol in Madison or in your own community, will continue. In the days after the recall we have already provided legal observers at demonstrations.
  • Our efforts to discover and reveal abuses of power, such as ignoring principles of open government, will continue.
  • Our efforts protect individuals' right to political expression - whether they signed a recall petition or not.

The ACLU has always been and will always be a non-partisan organization. However, we know that elections make a difference. Especially in these divisive times, the ACLU of Wisconsin is always there for all Wisconsinites regardless of their political beliefs; always vigilant in its protection of civil liberties.

The past 18 months have been marked by a radical, partisan attack on basic rights and liberties. Despite calls for an end to political differences, the threats to civil liberties will remain. The ACLU of Wisconsin pledges to do everything in our capacity to continue the work of protecting your rights through the courts, community education and civil liberties advocacy.

We know you have been asked to give to a lot of political campaigns this season, but the ACLU of Wisconsin needs your support to stay prepared and proactive all year long, year after year. Regardless of who is in office or which party has control, the ACLU of Wisconsin stands with you, the people of Wisconsin.

Please donate to the ACLU of Wisconsin Foundation to help us expand and strengthen our protection of your civil liberties and civil rights.

Thank you for your support. In times like these, we need to lean on each other.

Sincerely,
Christopher Ahmuty
Executive Director
American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin Foundation

P.S. Can you give $50? $100? Or more? Your gift to the ACLU of Wisconsin Foundation is tax deductible. This summer and fall there is a window of opportunity to protect civil liberties. Help us take advantage of this chance to make a difference.
