Juvenile Curfew Ordinance Up For Renewal
The Juvenile Curfew Ordinance for Dallas is set to expire on January 18 th , 2019. A proposal is under way to renew the ordinance for another three years. Pursuant to this ordinance, young people who are out past curfew can be fined up to $500 in addition to legal fees, as they are not given a court-assigned attorney. According to the Dallas Police Department, almost 70% of tickets issued for evening curfew violations are issued to Latino youth. Though representatives from Dallas' Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee are pushing this proposal forward, a study done by Texas Network of Youth Services and Texas Appleseed posits that, "w hile these ordinances are not necessarily directed at youth experiencing homelessness, young people experiencing homelessness may be more likely to be charged." A criminal record from non-payment of fines could prevent a young person from obtaining independent housing in the future, leading to homelessness. After8 will continue to monitor the renewal of this ordinance and the potential impact on the homeless youth who will be accessing services at the future After8 facility.
