New Additions to the Farm!
We have babies! As part of our preparation for upcoming lessons and public events, we let one of our broody hens hatch a couple of eggs! Broodiness is a natural, instinctual behavior of hens, causing them to lay a clutch of eggs and then sit on the eggs for around 21 days before they hatch. She only leaves her nest for short periods to eat and do her business, then she’s right back on her nest, keeping the eggs nice and warm. When her brood hatches, her instincts cause her to become very protective of her babies.
This mama hen is a Cochin Bantam. Cochin chickens are heavily feathered and even have feathered legs. And the name Bantam refers to the smaller size, about ¼ the size of standard chickens. The eggs that Bantam hens lay are ½ the size of a regular large chicken egg.
Come visit the barn during Afternoon Explorations Thursday and Friday 1:30-5PM beginning September 14th to see these tiny new additions!

Did you know that our nearby Blue Ridge Mountains, seen from Roper Mountain, have a unique geological feature called the Blue Ridge Escarpment? As you drive closer to Caesar’s Head or Table Rock, you will notice this abrupt rise in elevation. At the escarpment, these mountains suddenly drop or plunge down to meet the Piedmont or foothills below. This sheer drop of 2,000 feet or rise, occurs in less than a mile. The Cherokees called this feature the Blue Wall.

The Blue Ridge Mountains that extend across South Carolina are a segment of the Appalachian Mountains, which extend from Pennsylvania down to Georgia. Just recently I hiked up the tallest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountain chain, Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, nearly a mile high at 5,675 feet in elevation. Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet is the tallest peak in the Appalachians and in a sub-range of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In South Carolina, Sassafras Mountain is our tallest peak at 3,560 feet. In South Carolina, the Blue Ridge is the smallest of our 5 landform regions.
Visit the summit of Caesar’s Head atop the Blue Ridge Escarpment to experience this geologic feature. At Roper Mountain, try to get a glimpse of our Blue Ridge or Blue Wall in the distance or find out about our watersheds in our mountains that provide our drinking water.
