Sometimes it's a comfort that history repeats itself, sometimes a comedy, sometimes a tragedy. Unfortunately it always seems to be a guarantee that somewhere, someone, somehow will recycle the past without even knowing it.
As the Battlestar Galactica mantra goes, "This has all happened before. It will all happen again."
Yet the more conscious we can all become of the lessons of the past, the better chance we may have of actually making some lasting improvements. Maybe. It's certainly worth a try.
Here are some observations from the past that are way too relevant now.
"I think for my part that one half of the nation is mad - and the other half not very sound." Tobias Smollett - 18th century Scottish poet and author
"If once a man indulges himself in murder, very soon he comes to think little of robbing; and from robbing he comes next to drinking and Sabbath-breaking, and from that to incivility and procrastination." Thomas De Quincey - 19th century English essayist, author of Confessions of an English Opium-Eater
"I choose the likely man in preference to the rich man; I want a man without money rather than money without a man." Themistocles - 5TH century B.C.E. Athenian general and populist politician in the early days of the Democracy, fought at the Battle of Marathon
"The past cannot be cured." Elizabeth I - Queen of England, 16th century
"A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves."
Lao Tzu - Chinese philosopher 6th century BCE
Higher turn of the Spiral
There's a principle in the Wisdom teachings that we come upon the same challenges as we go through life and hopefully we deal with them better each time they come up, moving up the Spiral.
That Spiral is often seen as the chakra system, or you can visualize Maslow's Pyramid of Hierarchy, or the upside down pyramid of the physical-emotional-mental-inspirational planes.
The issue might be Independence. You can see this expressed in basic human developmental psychology in the Terrible Twos, the Teenage Rebellious years, forging one's own unique path of creativity, breaking out of a repressive professional or societal system, etc.
Independence is really important in societal, cultural, and nation-state situations.
One of my favourite examples of the Higher Turn of the Spiral is from Douglas Adam's fabulous book series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He notes that a society's attitude towards food evolves through three stages.
Survival - How can we eat?
Philosophical - Why do we eat?
Sophistication - Where shall we have lunch?
MYTH TIP:
What current issue captures your attention? What perspective on it can you find from the past? How far back can you find an example of it? Is there a myth about it? And what can you learn from it? Let us all know through your own outreaches and postings....

NEW SERIES!
"From the Vault"
This is the first in a series of essays by filmmaker and film critic Mike Restaino reconsidering notable and perhaps unheralded films from the vault, pieces of cinema that are more culturally imperative and artistically pristine in retrospect
than they appeared at the time of their release.
In this first installment he covers Bernardo Bertolucci's
lush and relevant period drama
The Last Emperor.
The Last Emperor
Director: Bernardo Bertolucci / 1987 /
2.00:1 Aspect Ratio / 163 Minutes
"It's funny how the colors of the real world only seem
really real when you watch them on a screen."
Anthony Burgess,
A Clockwork Orange
- Sweeping Multi-Culturalism. Edward Behr's book The Last Emperor is a door-stopper, an enormous, bloated volume crammed with historical research and deeply-chronicled relevant artifacts. While Bernardo Bertolucci's film certainly incorporates the overall conceit of historical events and the cast of characters from Behr's work, there's way more going on in his Last Emperor than meets the eye.
Consider this: the guy who shot
Apocalypse Now and
The Conformist is the D.P. for a movie filmed on location in China by the director of
Last Tango in Paris starring a Brit (Peter O'Toole - Lawrence of Arabia himself!) with an esteemed international cast and crew, with a score co-written by the lead singer of Talking Heads.
The Last Emperor is a global, poly-national cinematic effort, a meaningful kaleidoscope that is reverent and considering of the past and what it can teach us, but also audacious and curious in a fashion other films of its era were not.

Filmmaker Robert McGinley brings us yet another out-there movie breaking through the barriers of convention and thought. I'm privileged to have been a story consultant for Robert during his development process on this project.
DANGER DIVA
is a cyberpunk musical/thriller about a hard rocking singer who is coerced into becoming an electronically enhanced new-music diva by her high tech billionaire patron.
Set in the near future, her singing voice is used to control and energize the brains of employees that are being used as external processors for the corporation's high tech clients.
Referred to as Brain Cattle, the workers operate in a digital sweatshop processing binary algorithms, functioning musically as a chorus for the diva.
DANGER DIVA explores the conflict between high tech vs. high touch, and what it means to be human in a digitally enhanced bio-tech future.
And yes, I do have the T-shirt.
See more about Robert's other films here.
His version of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth in a skateboard world is priceless. Do check out Shredder Orpheus.
