Rev. David Wynn

Sometimes when I am sitting face to face with Jesus…that’s kind of how it goes in my reflections, I imagine that Jesus and I are just having coffee and conversation in my “Rev. Cave” in the garage…I just want to say “what in the world are you talking about?” Now part of that is just purely a thing we call “historical context.” We are not in the Rev. Cave, and I am not actually the person or people to whom Jesus is talking. It makes a difference. But still, context aside, I often want to know “what in the world are you talking about?” “What do you mean?”
Thus, this week’s sermon title…”Ugh.” On the surface it seems cut and dried and, of course, there are a gaggle of theologians who are certain they have it all figured out. I’ve heard more than a few sermons on the Beatitudes…but rarely from Luke’s account. It’s complicated and uncomfortable, but still good news. I think? So, come see me sweat this Sunday as I try to…well, I’m not sure…ugh!

Save me O God of my insecurities, my fears, my anxieties…

particularly when they become into suspiciousness, bitterness or apathy toward others. When I feel betrayed, attacked or despised; help me to embrace the abyss of vulnerability in such a way that I can better understand your desires and be truly merciful with myself and with others.
