Rev. David Wynn
Years ago, Agape was invited to the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Forest Hill. We were thrilled by the opportunity, accepted our invitation, and went online and registered. A week or so later, I got a call from the local pastor who coordinated the event to let me know that a “new secretary” had been in charge of sending out those invitations and had sent our church an invitation by mistake and we were “uninvited.” He explained that scripture says that homosexuality is an abomination to God and the parade was a family event. I wanted to say, “huh, did you know Bayard Rustin was an advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., and helped him organize the March on Washington, and Bayard was gay?” Or maybe “wow, that smacks of the kind of biblical hijacking that racists used to condemn black people.” Rejection begets rejection. Fortunately, I did not say either of those things, but I did ask if we could have coffee and conversation. He said yes to my invitation and even wanted to come to my church so that he could see our space. We set a day and time. The day and time came and went, phone calls went unanswered and long story short, we never talked. More rejection.

There are few things in life that hurt more than being rejected. We are tackling a doozy of a Jesus story this Sunday…it’s got rejection flying around in all directions and I’m trying really hard to figure out where God is taking us. Spirit is having a field day with that…but here’s what I do know…if it hurts a whole lot, it can teach a whole lot. Let’s talk about how rejection can actually make our lives better…see you Sunday.

O Creator, you bring us peace that passes understanding in the midst of chaos. You bring us strength in the midst of chaos. We ask you to shower us with double portions of peace and strength. Let us not forget that those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength. They will rise up on eagle’s wings.
And, when we are feeling low, remind us the Lord’s eye is on the sparrow—and that eye watches over us. When dangers, toils and snares come, we know you’ll make a way. As turmoil swirls in our governments around the globe, in our streets and, maybe even in our homes, we know you’ll make a way.
And, we know you’ll give us joy—joy that makes us dance and sing. Sing hosanna in the highest. Shower us with joy in the midst of pain and turmoil. Shower us with joy in the midst of the mundane. Make your presence known always. We lift thanks and praise to you, O Lord, for your faithfulness.
