"Glorious Diversity"
Rev. David Wynn

How can it be that creation is a veritable banquet of diversity, and we can be so invested in sameness?  I mean have you seen a star-nosed mole, a leafy seadragon, or Johnny Weir…if not, google them. We don’t live in a homogenous world and yet we spend countless hours trying to fit in and molding ourselves into the “likeness of.” One of the symptoms of this drive to be like each other is that we gather up “like minded” and “like appearing” (I just made that label up) folks and we call that normal. The normal, defined by us, then becomes normative, also defined by us. And THEN we label ourselves “us” and everyone else “them.”

This has apparently been going on for a very long time much to the dismay of the Creator. The prophet Isaiah had a vision about that. We call it the Tower of Babel. A group of folks who looked alike and shared a common language and a common culture all got together and discovered how to build bricks and mortar. They decided to use their new inventions to build a city with a tall tower so they could dwell behind the wall and stay the same, and stay put, and not be scattered, and keep the foreigners out. Sound familiar? God got wind of this and said, “uh oh.” God got busy and said, “let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” Then God did some scattering.

Diversity is another name for God and should be celebrated! God creates and names all of creation “so very good.” Creation Spirituality rejoices in and courageously honors the rich diversity within the Cosmos which is expressed in every individual and embodies multiple cultures, religions, and ancestral traditions. Creation is rife with theme and variation and yet fear has driven us to try to tame, label and homogenize it. What do we lose when we privilege dominant voices and limit perspectives? Let’s talk more on Sunday…

Agape' Summer Series - Sacred Earth, Sacred Worth

What if we lived life truly connected to the origins of Creation and the Creator? In the beginning God created all things and called them originally “good.”

In this series we will explore six essential ideas found in Creation Spirituality–a way of living within the community of earth that deepens our reverence for life, participates in the creativity of the cosmos, and develops our passion for justice and human transformation. It compels us to lead lives of spiritual inquiry, creativity, and prophetic action as our sacred work in the world.

M ost Gracious God
We come before you in thankfulness and humility for all you have done for us. Let us be a beacon to the world of what love for one another can do.
Lend us your strength to live as you have made us to live.
Lend us your love to love as you have asked us to love.
Lend us your compassion to be compassionate to our neighbors, because all people are our neighbors.
Help us to be patient and remember that all things happen in your time, not ours.
Help us to greet each day with a new heart and to always be thankful for your love.
We ask you to open the minds and hearts of those who would persecute us for being who you have made us to be.
